Editorial Reviews
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone, produced by the developing placenta shortly after the conception and secreted into the urine. The pregnancy test contains antibodies which specifically react with this hormone. Negative (not pregnant): Only one color band appears, in the Control Zone. No apparent band on the Test Zone. This indicates that no pregnancy has been detected. Positive (pregnant): Distinct color bands appear in the Control and Test Zones. It indicates that you are pregnant. The color intensity of the test bands may vary since different stages of pregnancy have different concentrations of HCG hormone.

The only trick with these is that they are not mid-stream tests. They are simply little test strips (they are the size of dipsticks that you test your urine with at the doctor's office for various things). So you must pee into a cup (I used the tiny throw-away bathroom sized "Solo" cups) and dip the stick up to a line that is marked on the strip. I saw results within minutes. Each strip is individually wrapped.
UPDATE: It turned out that the pregnancy for which I originally reviewed these strips miscarried at 6.5 weeks :( This is perhaps why the line was so faint and took so long to appear. I used these again when I became pregnant in January 2011 and the line was strong and appeared quickly. Now I am 23 weeks pregnant.
All in all, I'd say if you don't have to waste money at the drugstore, then don't! These work JUST as well and the price is much better. :) I'd definitely recommend this to women trying to conceive, and especially women who are compulsive testers! I also have added a customer image of one of my positive tests for anyone who may not be exactly sure what to look for. :)
UPDATE: Turns out I was about 4 weeks pregnant when I got my positive results using this test. Good luck to the rest of you Mama hopefuls out there! :)
They are so easy to use, as long as you don't mind the little bit of mess coming with peeing in a cup.
I happen to be trying to conceive, and I bought 50 of these strips for less then [...]. Now, buying 50 tests elsewhere at the LEAST around here, will cost you [...] PLUS tax. So, this is a real good deal! That, and they are more sensitive then the majority of other brands.
Love this product. I recommend this to ANYONE who is wastes money on those ept 3 packs that cost so much. This is the real deal, and I have used 10 so far and haven't had an issue with any of them. I let my friend, whom is prego, pee on one, and it read that she was. And then I took one, and it was negative and I am not prego yet. Then I let my friend who didn't know she was prego pee on it, and it was positive and she went to the doctor the next day, and found out she was only 2 weeks! (The hospital's test didn't even register the hormone, they had to do blood work after she insisted.) So yes. This product is amazing and it works!
My advice when reading the test is - if you see anything resembling a second pink line - go buy a First Response Early Test and see if you are pregnant.
Here's a trick. With the pregnancy tests, I found that you can leave them sitting for 12 hours or so to see if a positive line appears. If it does, you are probably pregnant, just very early. As they dry, the HCG will show up as a faint line after it sits if you are pregnant. Again, the blue tests did NOT work as well. The pink one's were accurate 100% of the time.
HCG's should double every 48 - 72 hours. If your positive line gets darker every 48 - 72 hours, then the baby is growing normally. If it doesn't, then it may not be growing normally. If you are new to this, having some progesterone levels and HCG's done at the hospital would be helpful in confirming the health of your current pregnancy. (I hate to sound robotic about this, but I've had to learn to be. Makes it hurt less when I loose one.)
Ladies struggling with frequent miscarriages, be sure you are getting plenty of Iodine! I found out last month that I am Iodine deficient! Iodine is a mineral that must be eaten; your body does not produce it. I'm told that Iodine is in every cell in your body and pertinent for optimal thyroid function and hormonal balance. I began taking Idoral or Iodoral(I may have the spelling wrong- bought it on Amazon). I take one mineral tablet per day. I immediately felt better; clearer thinking, better memory, more energy, and even lost 3 lbs. Then the best part, I ovulated on day 15 for the first time in years!!!! I usually don't ovulate until week 3 or even sometimes week 4!!! I'll keep you posted on the progress there! Still no positive test but I'm out of pink ones, I only have some blue tests. Ordering more pink today!
In short, if you are struggling to conceive, hang in there. For each little one, of mine, that 'flies to Jesus', I tell myself, 'I am that much closer to holding one in my arms'. I seem to have around 3 miscarriages before I can carry a baby full term. I am so incredibly grateful that I didn't give up; I have 5 amazing children to enjoy each and every day. Had I stopped, someone would be missing and there would be a forever missing place in our family. Press on mighty warrior! May God's mighty hand bless you, your womb, your baby, and your family. Isaiah 54:7 May not weapons formed against you prosper. May none be barren or miscarry among you- Exodus 23:26.
After some research, I found out that it can be almost a full 12 days for the egg to implant into the uterus and to begin releasing the hormone that the pregnancy tests detect.
Here is what the truth is, start using them as soon as you would like to because they are cheap (.19 each) but don't stress if it reads negative. Also, it takes a good 10 minutes for the test to show any line.
8/22/09 Update: I used these for a few days before my period was due and each time it was negative. The day it was due, I took another one and was about it throw it away but thought I saw a faint line. I took a pregnancy test at a local WIC and it was negative so I thought I was imagining things. But the next day I took another to be sure and it was the tiniest bit darker. So I went and bought a test that says, "Pregnant or Not Pregnant." (I love those tests. They're so no nonsense.) I was pregnant. I guess I can't complain too much about the test strips but I am used to pregnancy tests telling me a day or two before hand that I am definitely pregnant. I didn't like the uncertainty of it. But I will use them again. They're so cheap and if I don't have the money for a store pregnancy test, I know they will work....eventually.
I don't usually leave reviews but I thought this was important enough for me to say something. I ordered these, and yes they are cheap and yes they came fast. THESE ARE NOT WONDFO TEST STRIPS. These are Clincal Guard. I got 5 false positives from the Clincal Guard test strips, which are super skinny blue handled hcg strips. Upon talking with some women on my TTC website, I was informed from several women that the same thing happened to them with the same brand and style test. SO BUYER BEWARE!!! I have re-ordered from another listing on here that says from Wondfo and they really are the pink handled Wondfo's. I love Wondfo's...so do try those. Do not buy from Clincal Guard unless you want your heart broken like mine was.
For me, the negatives being clear and rapid is almost as important as whether the positives are early or not. Early conceptions don't always stick around, they estimate that half of eggs that fertilize never come to term, and most people never know it because they're not insane POAS-aholics.
Since I am, I decided I needed a cheaper "front end" test. With these, I can test every day if I want, or even a couple times a day, and I'm pretty confident in my result. I would never trust a single positive test anyway... because I've lost enough pregnancies to not assume that a positive test means a baby at the other end. So what I need are tests that I can use, and watch to see if they get darker.
The price is unbelievable. Dipsticks are my preference, I tend to pee in a cup even for the midstream tests, it's far tidier. It helps if you've got good control, and can pee a little, pee in the cup, stop before it overflows, then finish your business after you've pulled the cup away. This isn't hard for me at all, and if you're going to be seeing a doctor for pregnancy, you've got to get the hang of peeing in a cup anyway, they make pregnant women do it all the time.
For speed, these cannot be beat. Every other test says, "Dip for 5 (or 10, or 20) seconds, then lay flat, read between 5 and 10 minutes."
These, you dip for 3 seconds, lay flat, and they process and clear amazingly quickly, far faster than any of the "major" brands. And you're not left with a giant stick full of pee, either (the midstream tests kind of gross me out, actually, that way.) My expected negatives (i.e. testing after my period started but before it got heavy, to be sure it wasn't implant bleeding) were crystal clear white in the test zone within about a minute. Given that I'm often testing in the rush to get my older kids off to school, saving time that way is a godsend, and I don't end up staring at a pee stick for 10 minutes trying to figure out if I can see a squint of a line. It does take a few minutes for a positive result to show up, but far less time than major store brands like Answer and First Response.
When I first wrote this, I said, "I don't expect these to be the final word: They're cheap, and there there to keep me from blowing $1 or $4 or $8 every time I want to test. If I get a positive on one of these, I'll test again to see if it gets darker, and when it's darker, I'll break out the digitals I have left over from the last round. (Because really, husbands need to see the word PREGNANT spelled out for them, it seems like...)"
Having tested at different levels of hCG for many days now, I can say that these are definitely the final word. The results are darker, stronger and faster than any other brand I've tried. They are more consistent from day to day, showing darkening as my levels of hCG go up. I got a positive digital test at 12 dpo, after these were positive late on 10 dpo, and clearly positive on 11 dpo. And at 17 dpo now, they are far darker than other brands, faster, stronger, better.
These very much satisfy the science geek in me. I used to love the Dollar Tree tests, but heck... 20 cents a test, give or take? Mind boggling.
Edited to add: I got my first visible positives with these, ahead of FRER (at least as far as taking pictures of the tests is concerned!) They are remarkably consistent from tests to test in intensity, which means that it is so easy to compare color of tests from one to the next. I can really see the test getting darker even over the course of one day, and after a chemical pregnancy where the tests never really changed, it is encouraging.
I now have about 20 of these dry and pasted to a sheet of paper in order, and I can tell you that there are ZERO evaporation lines on the negatives (3-4 dpo, too early to expect a positive.) Even the faint lines that showed up after the test time did so in a way that makes clear the progression from no color to some color to definite positives. The first hints of what I would call "evaporation" lines show up at 7 dpo on my chart, and got slowly but consistently darker from 7-10 dpo (lines showing up after the test time), before "true positives" appeared late on 10 dpo, getting darker all day 11dpo.
First Response appears to be about 1-2 days behind in intensity, and is not getting darker in the same way.
I got some "cheap" ($2 per test) strips at a drugstore, Answer strips, and they are much less clear. The test, dipped in the same sample as the Wondfo tests, are fainter, "messier" and the dye is all over the place, even the control lines are a little vague. By contrast, Wondfo strips have very well defined dye areas and the tests look much "cleaner". These are probably the least gross pee sticks I've ever seen... :) Both tests showed "positive" at the same time, but the Wondfo test are cheaper, cleaner, and much faster to give results. And days later, the Answer tests look negative, while the Wondfos are still clearly positive.
Definite will buy again, as I've nearly gotten through the 25 I've had, and after having miscarriages, I know I'll want to test often in the coming weeks, for reassurance.
I have the pink handled tests, and cannot say enough good things about them. Because they are cheap enough that I feel like I can test whenever I want without feeling guilty, I was able to get enough consistent negatives that when the strips started being slightly ambiguous, it was pretty clear something was different, even if it did take a couple days after that for the lines to get really visible. The negatives were clear, clear white. The positives are still faint, but I'm still early, and it is enough to see the progression.
Note: The pink handled tests expire in 2012. I've gotten ones that expire in 2013 from another listing, with pale pink handles that say "hcg" (much like the older blue ones) and they are also very good. Wondfo seems to change the printing and color of their handles frequently, but the rest of the test is identical, and the results are very consistent. Don't worry if your handles look different, if you are buying from this listing, or the other listing I've left reviews (and pictures) for.
I've compared the plain pink and pink hcg handles in the same sample and the results are nearly identical, and both perfectly functional. Don't worry about handle color!
UPDATE: The gals on FertilityFriend and I have been doing some experimenting. Some people may know that dipping a pregnancy test directly in cola or apple juice can create a "positive" test (not just on this brand). What we now have some evidence of is that people who drink large quantities of these beverages may have just enough of whatever chemical creates those positives in their urine to create a faint "false positive". So if you're getting questionable results with these tests, consider checking your diet. Even organic apples, freshly juiced, can turn one of these positive, which means if you eat a lot of apples or drink certain kinds of juice or soda in large quantity, they may make your results less reliable. (One man who drinks a lot of apple juice got a positive result...) If you are testing early, consider sticking to beverages which don't cause these things to turn positive on their own... So far, water, OJ and milk are all just fine. We're testing more things over the next few weeks to see what does and doesn't skew the results. Personally, I drink a ton of Vitamin Water Zero and haven't had any iffy results.
Ultimately I have to say that the false positive results with this brand are probably due to the increased sensitivity to low levels of hormone (or whatever it is in apples that causes pregnancy tests to go positive!)
8 DPO: First test with both First Response and Wondfo. I thought it was too early to test, but I'd begun to experience some breast soreness which had been a sign for me in the past. Both tests were negative.
9 DPO: Still negative
10 DPO: Very very faint line on these Wondfo tests. First Response was still negative. Tested 2 more times with the Wondfo strips and both additional tests showed faint positives.
11 DPO: Clearer positive (darker line) with Wondfo strips. First Response still negative!
12 DPO: Clear positive on Wondfo, First response positive at last.
To test whether it was just a matter of my hormone levels increasing, I then went back and tested again with a cheapo. Still negative, 4 days past the time when my period was due. Not a recommended product for this reason. Buy a good test; these guys seem like a good buy but they just don't work.
I strongly believe people who gave these tests low ratings were not seeing "evap lines" or "false positives", they had pregnancies that did not stick and the tests were indeed accurate (most pregnancies end in miscarriage before people know they are pregnant, unless they test). If I had this problem and the line did not get darker, yes, I would have given this a bad review too, because I wouldn't have known that's what happened and I had no past experience with the accuracy of this brand.
I keep a journal to have accurate records, so I was able to compare this to my last pregnancy. I tested positive 2 days earlier with these tests (even if it was a ghost line) than I did last time with one of the test strips from the early pregnancy site. So these are just as good for a fraction of the price of those! I am very pleased with these and will definitely use them again!
Update- it is possible to get false positives as well- a false positive will be a thin line. For it to be an early, but true positive, the test line needs to be as thick as the control line.
This past month I got a faint positive at 12 days post ovulation (DPO) on these tests. I was so excited, but decided to double check on my First Response Early Result Test, hoping for a darker line, as they are supposed to detect lower amounts of the pregancy hormone. Well I got a definite negative on my First Reposne Early Result Test which really confused me (I used the same FMU and everything). Well I kept using these Wondfo tests for a week and my second line kept getting darker. I decided to try another First Repose Early Result test on 15 DPO, and finally I got a FAINT positive on that.
I couldn't believe how these Wondfo Tests were so much more sensitive than the expensive First Reposnse Early Result tests which promise results up to 6 days before your missed period. I will definitely be sticking with these Wondfo tests and only these in future pregnancies.
I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND these strips to anyone who wants an accurate, early result, but who doesn't want to spend a lot of money on drug store pregnancy tests.
**Update!** While I still love these tests, I thought I would add something from personal experience. Follow the instructions and always dip the tests in your urine and do not go above the marked line. If you urinate on the tests or get them wet around the dye strip, you'll get a false positive. Not an evap line. A nice, pink, must be positive line- only you're not pregnant- just stupid for not following directions! So use these correctly!
I had these, a couple from the dollar store (these came recommended, too), and some of the fancier store-bought brands.
These told me 14 days before the other ones that I was pregnant. Next up was the Dollar Store brand that told me I was prego 3 days later. It wan't until 11 days later that the store-bought ones (I used ClearBlue and First Response) told me I was pregnant.
My overall suggestion? Skip the store-bought ones, grab a pack of these, and you're set! And, if you want to double-check the accuracy of these ones, just grab a couple from a local dollar store. Way more effective, and way less expensive. You can't beat it!
Here's the amazing part about these tests - the morning of my final blood test I got a very faint positive. My blood test was an hour later. My HCG was at a 9!!! I couldn't believe the test picked up that small of an amount! I'm totally sold on these tests - if anything they are too sensitive!
