I'm addicted to side sleeping, even though it was terrible for my jaw problems (I have bruxism and TMJ). Every pillow I've ever tried has had my head's weight resting right on top of my jawline.
After 3 nights I have significantly less swelling in my cheeks and jaw. I can feel it with my hands where the muscles are not as tense. Why? Now when I sleep I'm distributing the weight evenly all around my head, not on my ears or jaw. The position also just creates a lovely stretch in my neck, a very gentle one, that naturally makes my jaws want to say loose and relaxed. Before I would almost tuck my chin inward towards my neck, and that made me want to clinch. The strain in my neck is now gone. I love how it cradles my head when I turn to sleep on my back, which i do sometimes. It's amazing...no pressure.
This pillow does take some adjustments, however. When I sleep on my side I have to move over some, away from the center. I, at first, had to search around a little to find the indentation in the pillow where my ear and jaw are supposed to be. Since I often toss and turn while I am asleep (or half asleep) the first night was a little difficult. The first night I slept on it incorrectly (at some point) and I woke up with a small ear ache. But now I think I am subconsciously adjusting to it, realizing I can't sleep on my side if I keep my head cradled in the middle. Each night just gets better and better. I know I make the first night sound bad, but even the first night was still good, since I slept like a baby.
I've always been one of those folks who likes to sleep with one arm under the pillow. That won't work with this pillow at all. I feel I have no place to put that arm, but I'm adjusting. This pillow had made me realize how tight my shoulders really are, and I'm starting to stretch them more. I just feel so good about sleeping in proper alignment position and that outweighs any negative experiences I've had so far. And, again, the no pressure on the jaw is wonderful.
As mentioned by several reviewers here, it takes a few days (sometimes longer) to get used to having "a hole in the middle of your pillow" but eventually, you do get used to it and it's suddenly an extremely comfortable pillow. In the early months, when I woke through the night, I was astounded by how comfortable I was. THAT never happened with a regular pillow - or even with those rounded cervical pillows that I used in the'90s. This pillow is so comfortable that I even take it with me on vacation. It's quite large (although does fit into a standard sized pillowcase), but it's worth it to me to forego room in my suitcase to ensure continued good sleeps.
If you decide to try this pillow, please give it time to change your sleeping habits. On a regular pillow, it doesn't matter where your head is when you change from back- to side-sleeping. With this one, side-sleeping in the middle of the pillow is not a comfortable option. Luckily, the way the pillow is constructed, you can roll comfortably from one side to the other with your head well-supported and comfortable throughout the movement. But it does feel a little weird the first few nights. Stick it out, though. It's a really neat and comfy pillow. I think you'll agree.
I use memory foam on my mattress, and after my shoulder sinks into the mattress pad, this pillow is too high for my head.
Sidenote: before purchasing this pillow, I had requested advice from the company re: the differences between the full sized pillow and the travel sized pillow. Wendy, had informed me at that time that the travel sized pillow offered the same exact support as the full sized pillow and that for my needs, the travel sized pillow "was perfect". Once the pillow broke down, however, she changed her comments and stated that the company had not received many comments re: the travel pillow and that it was a TRAVEL pillow and not meant to be slept on every night. I, for one, have never heard that about any kind of pillow. Perhaps the company thinks that we should have revolving pillows that we purchase from them?
The problem with other pillows is that they don't accommodate side and back sleeping, and I do both. This pillow allows for both. It does take a week, or so, to get used to it. And, of course, now that I'm accustomed to it, it's hard to sleep on any other kind of pillow. If you sleep on your stomach this is not a good choice for you.
My neck is long and flexible which can make for some interesting sleeping positions with other pillows - painful sleeping positions. The muscles in my neck are very sensitive to pressure so thankfully this pillow gives enough while still keeping me aligned. I have less muscle tension headaches and my range of motion improved once I trained myself to use the pillow correctly. On occasion I'll still find a way to circumvent the structure of the pillow and wake up with pain, however it's rare.
It won't look pretty on your bed. My husband said it looked like a foam urinal. Throw a nice decorative pillow on top and nobody will know you're harboring a bathroom wall fixture in your bed.
After years of searching, I found exactly what I wanted in this Therapuetica sleeping pillow, PLUS it comes in four different sizes, so you can choose the most appropriate clearance for your shoulders.
The side sleeping supports are firm on the edges, and slightly recessed in the center to relieve pressure on the ears. The center region is not only curved to fit the back of the skull, but slightly extended to provide support to allow me to lie flat. It's wonderfully comfortable for either sleeping or reading.
It has not made a difference in my snoring (according to my spouse), but it's still nice to find comfort at last!
Just wanted to add that two years later, I'm still very happy with my purchase of this pillow. It has really helped with my neck pain. If I don't use it, I pay for it for the next few days. LOVE this pillow.
Dont spend extra money for faster shipping, the regular got there just as fast, and was cheaper. I bought two pillows, so I know. Make sure you measure before you buy.
It is a bit large and may have problems with smaller pillow cases.
We have a queen-sized Select Comfort bed (which I absolutely LOVE) and that presents a minor challenge. The bed is two air chambers surrounded by foam edges. If I center the pillow on my side, I come very close to the foam edge when I roll to my side. I believe this will not be a problem with a king-sized bed. In my case, I place the pillow slightly to one side and try to sleep on the other side so that I receive the proper support from the air chamber.
The only negative is that it doesn't work well for sitting up to read or watch TV. I have to grab a conventional pillow for that.
I had two people measure me and both came up with 6.25", which is right on the border of two sizes. I ordered the Average size, but find I need the Large. Fortunately my wife can use this one. She also likes this pillow but feels it is a little firm. Since it's a foam pillow, I expect it will soften over time. I have no such complaint.
One other detail to note. The package indicates that the pillow can be returned or exchanged but only if it's still sealed in the original plastic. I placed a pillowcase over the bag and used the pillow for a few nights to check the fit.
They have refused to take the item back or offer any kind of resolution for me, such as an exchange, etc. I am so disappointed. Usually, Amazon is good about issues like this and they have not offered a resolution either. So, I'm out the $70 and own a pillow I cannot use.
I DO NOT recommend this pillow NOR Medex Supply.
to be simple, my english is not very good.
I always sleeping end up with my nake turning all the way left or right. wake up next morning with neck point on either side of my neck. this pillow keep my nake straight. if i want to sleep on the side, the pillow is just high enough to keep my neck parallel, no more neck paint!!!!
I am about to buy my 3rd pillow, moving down from average adult to petit adult as I find with our new very firm bed somehow I just was not getting into the right sleeping position. I have very narrow shoulders and have always felt I was borderline between petit and average height. There are some negatives, but even so, this product gets 5 stars in my book.
1. I tried it on our guest bed, which is much softer and it did not work as well. As others have said, sizing down might work. It definitely did not work with a memory foam mattress topper we tried for a while.
2. When sleeping on your side, I find you take up a bit more than your share of bed space. I like to sleep right at the edge of the pillow, and with the pillow being so wide, it would push over to hubby's side a bit. But it was not really a problem. Now we have a king bed, so no worries. You soon get used to moving your pillow when you roll over in your sleep.
3. This pillow is GREAT if you have a bad headache and lie down. You can support your neck and head weight perfectly.
I haven't decided yet if it's really worth that much money, though. :)
