Use with ice cubes crushed ice or cold water.
I had both knees replaced about a year ago. Needless to say, I needed to ice my knees frequently both before and after the surgery. In those two years, I tried every ice bag, ice pad, ice system known to man. Here is my assessment of all approaches:
REUSABLE GEL PADS: Usually blue, plastic and filled with gel, placed in freezer and is reusable. The good thing about these is that they don't leak--they are reusable and they can form around the area. The bad thing that was a deal breaker for me is that they lose their cool quickly--and you need to have a number of them in your freezer to make sure you have it when you need it. And they simply do not get as cold as a regular ice bag.
ICE BAG- RUBBER: Ice bags are arguable the best. You can fill at will with ice again and again. They get much colder than the gel pads. They can be packed in a suitcase and used at a hotel (if you travel like I do). HOWEVER, the wrong bag is worse that the gel pads. I have found that rubber ice bags are prone to "condensation" and if you use at night, you will wake up with a wet mattress where the bag is. Not fun.
ICE BAG-FABRIC: Again, the ice bag is the best overall. But Fabric bags can be very stiff and hard to form around your joint or area you are trying to ice. They don't conform as well as the rubber bags. And I have found they leak--not sure why.
THIS ICE BAG: The Mueller Ice Bag is the best ice approach I have ever used. It is soft like the rubber bags,but do not have the same level of condensation. And they DO NOT LEAK. The soft, rounded plastic of the mouth and screw top never hurt you when it happens to touch your skin, and the mouth is big enough for any size ice cube. The "fabric" of the bag is perfect. SIMPLY THE BEST

Mueller gets an additional point: I noticed that similar items (Mabis Dmi Healthcare Ice Bags - Large, 11 Inch, Blue, One) contain potential cancer-causing materials (as evidenced by the Proposition 65 warning on the item's description). I double-checked with Mueller, and they assured me there are no Proposition 65 materials used here. This is great customer service, and I'd definitely do business with Mueller again.
Don't be cheap if you're having surgery or something and need to have a regular supply of ice applied. This will keep the ice cold for hours, unlike disposable and reusable ice packs.

NOTE: If you need one that will wrap around your foot or knee, buy a larger model or buy 2 of these.
This bag Mueller Ice Bag (Blue) is unusally well made. Why go out shopping for this important item when you can buy it on Amazon on line.

What would I do without Amazon?
I purchased this ice bag a few months ago after reading various other reviews. I chose this product based on the other reviews, price, and free shipping. The bag arrived in just a matter of days after placing my order. I waited until now to write a review so that I could give the product a good "test drive". I am more than pleased with my selection!
The interior is lined with a rubberized material. (latex?..I'm not sure). The bag has a screw-on cap that doesn't leak. The exterior of the bag is made of a very fine woven material that allows any condensation to evaporate instead of sweating and making a big wet mess. Once, I laid the bag on a magazine and after a couple of hours the cover only show a very slight presence of any moisture. It didn't feel wet, but you could tell that some moisture had been absorbed by the front cover, causing a very slight warping.
I have gout and periodicly suffer from flareups in my ankle and knee joints. I have tried using ice cubes in ziplock bags with minor success. The plastic bags always seemed to sweat and I would have to wrap everything in a towel to keep thigs dry. I was amazed that this bag didn't sweat. Now I can wrap my ankle or knee joint using an elastic stretch bandage to hold the ice bag in place during the night without the bed getting wet. The 9" bag is just the right size to conform to my ankle or knee. If it becomes too cold with the bag directly on my skin, I place a small towel between them. I am very happy with this product.
These are excellent. Fill them with ice from the ice chest and you're ready to go. Great for those injuries at horse shows, camping, the ice rink or the sports field.
By seeing this product it looks cheaper quality product due to the quality of low quality outer cloth but the inside material is really good as it is allowing you to use it for longer period and that too without any leakage. Strongly recommending this.
