Editorial Reviews
Mucinex breaks up the mucus that causes chest congestion while providing fast and long lasting relief. Mucinex is specially formulated in a bi-layer tablet. The immediate release layer goes to work fast while the extended release layer continues to work for 12 hours. And for your worst chest congestion symptoms, try Maximum Strength Mucinex.

Great Rroduct But Save $ By Buying Immediate Release Tablets - IndyDon on Dec 5, 2005

I have used extended release guaifenesin (the active drug in Mucinex) for many years to help with sinus drainage and chronic bronchitis. It really works to clear out the lungs and my MD tells me it helps reduce sinus drainage as well. I stocked up on the prescription form of guaifenesin just before the FDA pulled all extended release guaifenesin from the market except for Mucinex. The reason for this action was somewhat esoteric and it allowed Mucinex to have a monopoly on the extended release form. Well, my horde of prescription guaifenesin finally ran out and I started using Mucinex. It works that same as the old prescription drugs because it is the same thing (they are both extended release guaifenesin). But, Mucinex is very expensive. So, I switched to immediate relase guaifenesin and found that it works just as well at a significant cost savings. The only thing is that you will have to take more immediate release tablets to equal a 12-hour extended release tablet. If you can't let go of the Mucinex, consider taking the immediate release during the day and Mucinex at night. You will save a lot of money. Mucinex is the only extended release tablet on the market. So, if it is guaifenesin and it is not Mucinex then it is an immediate release tablet. Check the price differences.

Life Saver!! Am I Am Not Kidding - Deborah MacGillivray on Dec 30, 2005

I have problems with so many of the infection fighting meds on the market. They cause bad side effects, and often do not do what they should. This last go around over $1000 in medications and each round made the problem WORSE.

I took two of these tables and they stopped on an oncoming attack of bronchitis. But to my surprise they knocked out a sinuses infection that had been dragging on for two months.

I could have save $1000 if I have these from the start.

Amazing stuff.

Great Results And The Best Price Out There! - Pamela U. Moore on Oct 20, 2005

This medication really keeps your lungs clear, no side effects with my other medications, and the price is the BEST out there. Amazon, keep it up with the great prices on what we need. Wal-Mart can't match your prices or selection of products!!!

Very Effective, Though Expensive Expectorant... - Martin Vidnovic on Jan 4, 2007

...which is why I give it 3, not 5 stars. It used to be called Humibid (Nathan Lane thanked it in one of his Tony Award acceptance speaches), was obtained by prescription, and if you had a prescription drug program, you could get about 120 six hundred mg. pills for $10.00. The active ingredient is Guaifenisin, and it is quite an effective expectorant, especially if you take the maximum dose of 1200 mg., twice daily.

I suppose drug companies make more money by selling it over the counter, which is why they do it, and Amazon is the best price I found (about $5.00 cheaper than CVS),so that's just over 4 times as expensive as the 'good old Humibid days'. There are cheaper generic brands which come in 400 mg. pills, but so far the ones I've tried produce an uncomfortable 'flushing' affect...but that's just me. Thanks, Martin Vidnovic

There ARE Other Options! - By A Customer on May 22, 2004

I have been taking 1200 mg. of Guaifenesin daily to control asthma for ten years. For those of us without medical insurance, the availability of Guaifenesin OTC has been a Godsend. When I did have insurance I was able to obtain it cheaply with a small co-pay. Not so now that I pay for all doctor's appointments and prescriptions out of pocket.

Adams Labs is NOT the only source for generic Guaifenesin. They have a patent on their "time release" formulation ONLY, not on the drug itself.

A google search for "Guaifenesin" will yield many Online sources in a myriad of strengths, from 200 to 600mg tablets, at a fraction of the cost of Musinex. I'm taking two 400mg tablets of a "fast acting" OTC generic Guaifenesen 3 times daily and found this works just as well as Musinex at a cost of 24.00 for a 30 day supply.

If you want Musinex, however, Amazon's price can't be beat. Especially if you order 2 and get free shipping.

Guifenesin For Fibromyalgia - 3bells on Oct 27, 2004

After using guifenesin for almost a year and a half, my fibromyalgia symptoms are amazingly improved. But you definitely need to follow the protocol correctly or you will be wasting your money. You need the book, "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia Fatigue" because it gives the necessary directions.
Links are not allowed by Amazon in reviews, but if you do a google search for Dr. St Amand's "fibromyalgia treatment center", you will find all the information you need along with a support group that is crowded with people who are finding help using guifeneson.

I use the Extended-Release because it is working and I don't want to lose time trying the other kinds, but if you are just beginning, a lot of people are being helped by the fast acting guifeneson.

As for me, I will buy guaifenesin and do without other things in order to continue getting my life back from this life sapping condition!

Not Used For Conventional Purposes - lisa flack on Jan 4, 2007

I have fibromyalgia. I am using this product to help reverse my symptoms. It really seems to be working. I hope one day to feel better and live a more normal life. This is a great product!!

Thanks Mucinex! - BB on Mar 22, 2006

This OTC medication is the only thing that has helped my Fibromyalgia besides sleep and good nutrition. I can start to tell a major difference after only missing a couple of doses. However, determining the correct dose to take did require some trial and error. This treatment should also only be done within the guidelines for the Protocol, otherwise, blocking will occur and you will be wasting both your time and money. I have tried numerous forms of guaifenesin, but the Mucinex is by far my favorite!

Caution: Contains Blue#1 - Cynthia Raxter on Mar 9, 2005

On commercials for cold medicine, at the doctor's, at the pharmacy -- they always say in a deep authorative voice: "...when you have a COLD be SURE to drink LOTS of LIQUIDS!"

Why?

To be graphic for a moment, if you have a cold (or the flu), and get dehydrated, mucus is like glue. It is hard to cough up glue! "LOTS of LIQUIDS!!" keeps all the crud fluid and moving. Wow! It is just like rocket science! :-) (Or maybe Math!!! Wow!!)

Guaifenesin helps the "LOTS of LIQUIDS!!" out. (But you still need the liquids!!) Guaifenesin is the active ingredient in cough syrup, Robetussin, Niquil, Humibid and this drug, Mucinex.

This pill makes getting Guaifenesin easy: One pill every 12 hours -- compared to two spoons of cough syrup every 4-6 hours. (With LOTS of LIQUIDS!!)

Also good news! In my price comparisons, Mucinex has been cheaper than an equal dosages of even the store-brand cough syrup. In my shopping, it has not been cheaper than generic, fast-acting guaifenesin tablets or Humibid tho'.

One major caveat for the allergy-prone among us, Muxinex contains Blue #1 -- a dye. Blue #1 is probably still better for you than cough syrup -- A.K.A. red-dye-laced sugar syrup. (YUM!!!) But! Blue #1 is an useless addition to an essential medicine. Who cares if the pills are blue?

I use 400MG Humibid caplets. It is dye-free and vanilla-flavored. It is about the same price -- or a little cheaper than this medication -- depending on the size of the bottle and whether you need to take it every day (a 100 count bottle good) or just when you have a cold (50 tablets plenty!). The over-the-counter version of Humibid is not "long acting" -- but it is easy for me to pack 1 tablet for a lunch-time dose if I am wheezed up that bad.

Two questions:

#1 How much is "LOTS of LIQUIDS!!"? For an adult, that is about 8 ounces every hour. Good choices are water, soup, or juice. You can also drink caffeine-free soda or sports drinks -- I don't need that much sugar. Fruits work too: applesauce, melons, grapes are all good sources of moisture. I have found it is good to, once an hour, imagine myself in a desert... for days... and then chug-a-lug a glass of water. It is amazing how good the water tastes!

#2 How do I know all this? I have asthma. It is exacerbated by colds or the flu. I ended up in the hospital w/pneumonia when I was 24 because I didn't drink "LOTS of LIQUIDS!!" Duh!! One of my more bright and shining moments! :-)

Guaifensin OTC = Rip-off - Joan Day "I love NY" on Apr 14, 2004

Mucinex works well, but for those of us who need it daily, it is a rip-off compared to the prescription generic drug! .

Prior to guaifenesin going OTC, I was able to obtain a 3 months supply of 1200mg tablets for $16. Since I need 1200mgs twice a day, the 600mgs Mucinex is very expensive--40 tablets lasts just 10 days.

I am very unhappy about the change to OTC. With no competitors, Adams Labs is making a bundle on this medication. With generic prescription drugs, the consumer was the winner, but with only one patent for the OTC drugs, the makers are the winners and the consumer suffers for it!!

It has a very bad after-taste, which the generic guaifenesin did not have.

Works But Expensive - By A Customer on Jul 7, 2004

Although this product seems really effective for treatment of Fibromyalgia, the 40 count bottle makes guaifenesin expensive. I prefer the 400 mg capsules that cost only one third as much; try Google for it or look for the guaifenesin 100 count bottles--it is more affordable.

Truly Awesome! - Mishael Austin on Nov 10, 2005

I used to use the prescription form of this several years ago, but had to stop because it severely dehydrated me. My doctor recommended this for me when I had a sinus infection, and I have to say, it works wonders - with no dehydration. I will definitely keep using this!

Mucinex Expectorant Bi-Level Tabs - J. B. Litwak on Sep 29, 2005

Mucinex is an excellent product. It really helps with my asthma. I don't know where I'd be without it.

This Is The One To Get! - SmartEnuff2Know on Nov 29, 2004

I have been using Mucinex brand Guaifensin for several months now, with amazing results for my fibromyalgia. Just when I thought nothing would work, Mucinex has "Got me off my back" - I feel like I am getting my life back. This is a great price - but couldn't we have it in the 100 tablet size? I have been buying it elsewhere - so I know it's available. BTW - Amazon's price is the best price I have seen anywhere! (Please don't raise it)

Mucinex OK, Good Amazon Price, Bad Deal All Around - K. Dawson on Sep 13, 2004

I have chronic sinus problems, and have recently been diagnosed with the early stages of emphysema at the tender age of 25. Yikes. I frequently took LA Guaifenesin tablets 1200mg and better for lung/sinus congestion and find that for thinning my thick junk, accept no substitutes. Then, the advent of the OTC guaifenesin. Nobody in my town carries it regularly, there's only one variety of extended release available on the market, and my health insurance does not cover OTC medications (I could get a month of Guaifenesin LA for < $5.00 USD.) I'm glad someone stepped up to the plate and made an OTC guaifenesin so that people could have access to it, and it's a good formulation, but all in all Mucinex is just another symptom of the patent abuse common in pharmaceuticals. They didn't reinvent the wheel, and there were people already manufacturing it in extended-release form in over-the-counter strength, yet now we have to wait a few years before there will be an affordable long-acting OTC. I got sick of it and bought half a kilogram of pharmaceutical grade Guaifenesin for about $42 shipped.

Best Price Anywhere For MUCINEX - Carolyn Carlson "cbc on Jan 4, 2007

I use Mucinex everyday, 365 days per year. For more than two and a half years, I have been taking the maximum of 2 tablets twice daily, and I haven't had a single sinus infection. I previously had to take antibiotics multiple times per year after colds or allergies settled in my sinuses and caused secondary infections.
This is the best price I have found on Mucinex. I need 120 tablets per month so price is an issue. Amazon doesn't charge shipping or tax and it is delivered right to my door. Although it costs more up front, Amazon saves me a lot of money on my indispensible Mucinex.

Mucinex Expectorant Eliminates Sinus Headaches - bob fox on Jun 16, 2007

Mucinex Expectorant eliminates sinus headaches. I love it. I have been using it for years, with no sinus headaches. Wonderful. Amazon has the best price.

Mucinex Is A Life Saver - Susan Delarue on Mar 8, 2007

My husband has a serious asthma condition and takes several prescribed medications on a daily basis. Mucinex augments the prescribed medications and keeps his lungs clear. He is unable to expel mucous in his lungs without the Mucinex, and we consider this product a life saver.

Works Great! - C. Olsen "Lovin'Life on Jul 24, 2005

I use Mucinex to control Fibromyalgia. It works extremely well and has no side effects. A side bonus for me was that my sensitive teeth, caused by sinus pressure (allergies), have totally quit hurting.

Great Stuff For Allergy Sufferers! - c2 on Jul 18, 2005

Be sure to try this stuff (I would suggest at the advice of a physician) if you have allergies. It was prescribed for me for a different reason, but I found that it relieved the chest tightness that I have associated with my allergies. It really is a night and day difference and I highly recommend this product. Wish it was a little cheaper, however.

Great Product! - Fay Molina-Sagon "Fi on Mar 28, 2006

I use this for my fibromyalgia treatment ( see "What your doctor may not tell you about Fibromyalgia)..since 2003. Very expensive here in Hawaii and only comes in 40-tablet sizes. Thanks so much for bringing this out in the 100-tab size! Keep the free shipping! I will definitely spread the word...sooo convenient! No need to go anywhere to pick up.

Aloha...

Mucinex Inhibits Sinus Infections - A. Vedra on Feb 28, 2006

I've been taking mucinex tablets for 2 to 3 years. I have had very few (less than 3)colds or sinus problems since taking it twice a day during this time. Prior to this time I frequently suffered sinus problems requiring treatment with antibiotics.

Mucinex - Sharon Ross on Feb 18, 2006

Excellent product. Allergist told me about it for allergies. Now I use Mucinex instead of Zyrtec. Really thins out everything in your nose, ears, and throat. Would highly recommend it.

Purchase Review - Sue Sarkis "super sl on Feb 20, 2011

The seller and Amazon both failed to mention the short shelf-life left as clearly imprinted on the package. Doesn't do a buyer any good.

Excellent Price - Penny on Feb 20, 2011

I have used this product for almost 20 years, daily, for excess mucus. When I went off I got bronchitis, goes without saying that the stuff keeps that problem at bay. This is all related to allergies.

Mucinex Part Of Fibromyalgia Treatment - sewlady on Feb 18, 2011

Guaifenesin, the ingredient in mucinex, has been used for years as a treatment for fibromyalgia per[..]. When it was patented as mucinex, it combined slow and fast acting guaifenesin that seems to be more helpful.

For people without fibromyalgia, mucinex is a great product to treat mucus/congestion problems.

Great Price - Carla Hurley "MomLoo on Jan 21, 2010

I buy Mucinex 12 hour 600mg 100 tabs. This product comes to me every month automatically and saves me so much money. My most recent shipment including shipping and handling cost me a bit over $17. You can't beat that! You must sign up for automatic delivery for the great prices.

Great Price! - Paula A. Reid "sew g on Dec 23, 2009

Normally, I buy this product from my local drug store. I thought I was getting a good deal when they would put it on sale for "Buy-One-Get-One". Well, the price through Amazon.com was even cheaper than that! I definitely will buy again!

Mucinex LA - Plays in the Dirt on Jan 10, 2007

Finally, this product is available at an affordable price! Three of us use it twice a day, and buying the little 40 tablet bottles was VERY pricy - enough to tempt us to skip it, making allergies, sinus and asthma symptoms worse. Still not down to the price of the old generic that Adams drove off the market with their phony patent lawsuit, but a little better.

Mucinex Expectorant, Bi-Layer Tablets - Henry LeMien on Jan 9, 2007

Prescribed by a pulmonologist for COPD.
Good price when purchased in 100's rather than in 20's or 40's.
Fast delivery. Satisfactory service.

Mucinex Works Great And When You Buy In Bulk In Just As Cheap As The Generics - R. A. Marynowski on Aug 2, 2006

I'm a chronic Mucinex user due to sinus and allergies problems. It used to be great when I could just get the generic Guaifenesin through my prescription mail service for five bucks, but buying in bulk from Amazon is much better than paying $11.99 for twenty tablets from Walgreens or Osco. The Mucinex definitely helps keep the sinus drainage clearer whichs means less sinsus infections and discomfort.

Mucinex Expectorant - John R. Holloway on Nov 9, 2005

This product is giving me much relief from a heavy mucus discharge. I will continue to use this product.

Mucinexa Good Deal - B. Gordon "maestra" on Nov 6, 2011

I have been looking for a large size bottleof Mucinex as i take it dialy in winter.
I found it ata very reasonable price on Amazon.

Drained Sinuses, Not Wallet - John French on Sep 22, 2011

Can't beat mucinex. Great way to loosen sinus pressure. I like how it does not have the side effects that decongestants have. I can even take one at night because it is not a stimulant. Great price for the quantity.

Amazon Mucinex Review - Queenie by the sea on Mar 29, 2011

Mucinex Expectorant, Bi-Layer Tablets, 100-Count Bottle

Mucinex was prescribed by my allergist for a cough. It works for me with no side effects. I also use a nasal spray along with Mucinex. The spray alone does nothing for the cough. Ordering from Amazon definitely saves a lot of money.

Competitive Price On An Expensive OTC Drug - F. Patterson on Mar 10, 2011

I don't think you will find too many people - manufacturers excluded - that think that Mucinex 12-hr. is reasonably priced. The manufacturer charges what they do because they can; they simply have no competition in the extended release formulation.

That being said, Mucinex 12-hr really does work well, so if you're gonna ride you need to buy a ticket. Shopping around on the web led me to this vendor and I just try to maximize my savings with combined shipping and larger bottles.

Expect Exellence In This Expectorant - stanislaus on Jun 3, 2010

Excellent expectorant. Recommended by my doctor, and this is a thrifty, convenient way to get it. Also, the bottle is very convenient; Mucinex is putting some smaller quantities into foil in boxes, and I find it extremely hard to extract the tablets. Best bet - if you have to take it on a long term basis - take an Amazon subscription, which makes this item really inexpensive and really convenient.

Mucinex Tabs. - Larry Phillips on Nov 27, 2009

I have been taking these for years to replace Guafinesen for COPD.
Amazon is priced lower than the local pharmacies or big stores.
Shipping and service is above reproach

Mucinex - Proud Grandpa "retir on Jul 30, 2009

I have been using Amazon.com for several months to buy this product due to the amount that the dr's have me taking to get rid of muscus. This is by far the best price per volume that I can find anywhere. I have it set up to ship monthly to meet my needs. I always receive a notice prior to the shipment and am given the option to not ship that month. I recommend for anyone requiring an Expectorant.

Great For My Lungs & Fibromyalgia! - Sandra Jo on Jul 22, 2009

I have COPD and Fibromyalgia. Mucinex (guaifenison) keeps my lung mucous loose and also relieves my fibromyalgia pain. If you try it for the fibromyalgia benefits, do not take aspirin as I understand it blocks the action of guaifenison from helping block the pain.
