Good Quality - Please Provide Size Guide - critical professor on Oct 9, 2009

This is a well-made product. I wear men's shoe size 10.5M and ordered a medium, as I had previously from another maker. It is definitely too small. The company was very responsive and have said that they will replace it with a large. It would help to provide a size comparison chart for this product on Amazon.

Great Product - 1/2 Of The Solution - Nathaniel Weiss on Oct 22, 2009

I am 42 and sprained my ankle badly playing tennis about three months ago. I have done physical therapy and have started to get back into playing, but still have some pain.
This brace is fantastic. I was able to start playing again and have full support. The best thing is if you have plantar fasciitis - the straps underneath give you a great deal of support.
The other half of the solution, though, is an Aircast A60. This is great for walking around - but doesn't offer the requisite support that the McDavid brace does for playing. The problem with the McDavid is that it's a bit much for non-sports use. I now have both the McDavid and Aircast and am very happy.

Great Ankle Brace, Slightly Bulky - drew on Oct 21, 2010

I have probably bought 6 different ankle braces in a never-ending quest to find the perfect one. My wife makes fun of me about this every time I bring a new one home. I used an uncomfortable ankle brace with stiff plastic rods in it for a long time, before I finally bought the McDavid based on a recommendation from a basketball buddy. Then I decided to buy the ASO for comparison. They have exactly the same design with a few minor differences, and both work extremely well to stabilize the ankle without being uncomfortable. The McDavid is a bit more bulky, and has something like 9 sets of eyelets to lace up, which takes a while to tighten/loosen. It also felt a bit tight in the forefoot initially, although that has improved with breaking in, to the point where it no longer bothers me. The ASO has a smaller profile and only has 6 sets of eyelets to tighten/loosen, which makes it easier to use. I like them both, and now use one on each ankle. I prefer the ASO for ease of use, but the difference between the two is minor.

McDavid Vs ASO - Xiao Geng on Jun 19, 2011

I bought this product after twisting my ankle one week before Tough Mudder SOcal. During my event, this brace worked flawlessly, and comes highly recommended.

I do a lot of hiking on uneven terrain, and came close to twisting my other ankle. So I decided to buy the other highly reviewed ankle brace, ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis.

The good points:
They both work on the same principle, and are both effective at their purpose. A tight fitting, but still flexible foot brace, with two cross straps, and one around the lower shin/upper ankle strap.

They both get a 5 star rating from me, there are minor differences between the two, with which I will list here:

The McDavid is tighter on the top of the foot, and is harder to remove. Tends to be slightly uncomfortable if overtightened. You have to untie multiple laces to be able to remove it. It feels more snug than the ASO. I would say this one offers slightly better support around the ankles, at cost of more discomfort. Good if you have more of a severe sprain.

The ASO gives you more mobility, still with great support on the ankle. Easier to remove.

I wear 9.5 shoes, so I have medium for both.

Overall, they are both good, but the McDavid feels slightly tighter on the foot. I still give both 5 stars, since they both perform as designed.

Great Ankle Support - Jeremy Burson "Hoss" on Mar 22, 2010

I have played alot of basketball and this is one of the best braces Ive ever worn. Its takes a little longer to put on than a traditional ankle brace but gives amazing support for the back of your foot and ankle. I would recommend if you have trouble with rolling your ankles.

Great Support. Make Sure You Have Right Size. - Parson on Nov 22, 2009

Great product. My ankle is not 100% but with this product I feel like it is. There is no soreness after the run either. I fully recommend. Just be sure to get the right fit for your ankle.

The Single Greatest Investment I Have Made In My Life - Mher Almasi on Apr 4, 2011

I am only 20, but there is not a person out there with more experience with ankle injuries than me. Growing up I played every sport from basketball, football, soccer, to swimming and water polo. Unfortunately, I had developed weak ankles, and could not get away from the problem no matter what I tried. I would sprain my ankles 2-3 times a month. This culmulated in a broken ankle over two years ago, when I fractured my right ankle. After my ankle healed, I spent 60 dollars on a pair of these braces. This might sound unbelievable, but since that day, I have not had an ankle sprain. I wear them everytime I play basketball, and often times when I play football or soccer. The great thing about this product is, that despite its rigidity and stregth, you can wear it during physical activity, to avoid injuries, rather than just when recovering from injuries. Now I can play with complete focus, rather than worry about what will happen to my ankles when I land everytime I go for a rebound.

No Injuries - Ulf Erling Ems on Mar 9, 2010

I've tried many different kind of ankle support but none of them seemed to do the job. I still twisted my ankle. I've used the McDavid ankle support in martial arts trainings for two years now and I have had no injuries.

This Is A Good Brace - Ryan Hamm on Jul 30, 2008

This brace is exactly the same as the brace given to me by my orthopedist after my grade III ankle sprain.

It's just like taping up the ankle but with velcro so you can do it over and over again.

If this brace won't save your ankle then nothing will.

Great Brace For Great Price! - Mike T on Jul 21, 2011

I've used the McDavid ankle brace with strap for 2.5 weeks now, and I love it.

1) Time to put on / take off: it takes me a minute or so to put it on, and much faster to take off. Once I've threaded the laces that cover the top of my foot, I never undo them anymore. When taking off, I only need to undo the laces that go across my ankle/lower shin, while simply loosening the laces that cover the foot. When putting on, I only have to pull the laces tight, lace the ankle area, and strap the velcro. Pretty fast. Maybe I'll do a video "review" to show what I mean.

2) Support: like others say, there is a short break-in period in which the brace feels stiff. After that, it feels really nice. It gives plenty of support while still allowing me to play tennis (about 1.5-2.5 hours each session).

3) Materials: well, one complaint would be the logo on the velcro strap that you put on last. It started coming off because the logo is stiff rubber while the strap is elastic. As the strap stretches, it inevitably breaks contact with the rubber logo. I don't really care though. Maybe McDavid should've just left it off.

4) Issues: regarding the two velcro straps that go underneath the foot and up the sides, people have said that they scratch at the skin. This included my brother and his friend. I haven't had the issue because I wear long socks. Regardless, the McDavid company does write in its directions that you can trim the excess velcro part with scissors, which should eliminate the abrasion issue.

5) Size: I wear size 8.5 running shoes, size 9 tennis shoes (for actual tennis playing, not to be confused with casual sneakers), and the medium size McDavid fits me well. I was worried that it would be too big, but that was not the case. I've loosened my right tennis shoe so that my foot, plus sock, plus brace, can fit inside. No problem.

If you're prone to rolling your ankle, don't hesitate to buy this. I'm so happy to play tennis without having to worry about hurting my ankle. I hope it lasts me years.

[UPDATE] Regarding #4 above, I tried wearing short ankle socks. I trimmed the velcro that extends upwards past the brace. After playing a 2.5 hour tennis session, I had no abrasion marks. However, I did find it uncomfortable for the brace to contact my skin directly. It might just be preference, something you get used to. As for me, I'm going back to wearing long socks when I use the brace.

Injury Protection - bballer on Feb 28, 2011

I bought two of these because I sprained both of my ankles numerous times playing basketball. What would most usually happen is I would step, or land on someones foot and have moderate to sever sprains. I've been blessed to be a quick healer but when players unknowingly place there feet and/or legs under you when you rise up for a jumper or dunk/layup the risk of spraining or even breaking is high. These braces have saved my ankles from further damage. I can't count the number of times I have either landed on someones foot and felt the brace keep my ankle in place. Even on the most severe miss steps where I would be out a month[s] without these, I have just kept on playing. This is a great product for athletes who spend a lot of time in the air, which for reference purposes I will state that I do.

The only drawback with these braces is that they are bulky. But the protection is worth it. I did cut off the top wrap around strap about a month after I got them and they still worked as well without the top strap. I've had them for well over two years now and they still provide the same amount of support. They are getting worn in some areas but like I said, they still protect. I play about three times a week so they hold up to a lot of use.

Hope this helps.

Fantastic - Michael L. Franklin on Nov 10, 2010

Fantastic product, I am 51 I run the trails at Stone Mountan Ga.
I sprained 1 ankle two times and the other once, I play tennis and sprained ankle put a real damper on that, so I researched ane supports and these were a fair price. I have used them for a month and I run at least three times a week on the trails( lots of roots, rocks, and other ankle breakers) I don't think I could sprain my ankle if I tried with these on. There is no down side

Great Brace To Wear After A Sprained Ankle. - CAM "CAM" on Nov 2, 2009

Great support, comfortable and easy to put on. Perfect for tennis, working out and running following a bad sprain.

Great Support - max on Jul 14, 2011

I hurt my ankle playing basketball, got the ankle support and I'm very pleased with it. Great support and protection.

Good Support But The Inside Seams Chafe Too Much. - Ronald A. Leeruangsr on May 15, 2011

The inside seams are a bit too rough and chafe away my skin whenever I play. Hopefully, this is a exception and others don't experience this.

Ankle Support - Its just me on May 4, 2011

It is a very useful product. I play a lot of basketball and have injured my ankle many times. This brace has helped me during the game and helped support my ankle after I sprained it.

Great, But Cumbersome - J. Wheaton "J. Wheat on Mar 3, 2011

This really helps to alleviate my ankle pain during walks/hikes.

However, I feel like I'm strapping myself in for some sort of serious S&M leg session (ok, maybe not that bad, but you get the idea I hope). You really have to get it on the "sweet spot" under your heel, otherwise it rubs like a thing that rubs alot in a bad way. I can't really wear it casually around the house though, it's just for support while walking/hiking.

I Can Walk Normal Again! - Matthew Abshire on Feb 13, 2011

I broke my talus bone in my right foot April of 2010. I still limp on it and have pain. When I wear this brace it supports my ankle so I can put my full weight on it with out any pain. I wish I would of bought this brace sooner!

Exactly As Advertised - J. Bentley on Jan 29, 2011

Until I tried this product, there had never been an ankle brace that had anywhere near the effectiveness of getting taped by a trainer. It's also more comfortable than getting taped. I'm a size 12 shoe and the medium fits well. Hope this helps.

Good Choice - daveetrice on Jan 15, 2011

I am just getting back into running for my new year's resolution (cliché, I know) and managed to sprain my ankle two weeks in. After spending about two hours reading reviews here on Amazon, I decided to go with the McDavid brace and had it shipped overnight. Couldn't be happier with it! Great support, feels good on the foot, and it pretty easy to get off and on. It does take about two-three days for your foot to get accustomed, but after that it feels pretty natural. It was definitely a good choice and I do feel that it will speed my recovery so that I can get back out on the pavement!

Very Supportive - Mandy "mandy" on Dec 22, 2010

When my son's heel pain is very bad, this works well. It isn't something he can wear inside of a shoe, so I rely on the other supports for that. But this one is great to stabilize his foot at bedtime or when just hanging around the house. This works well for Sever's disease and probably plantar facaitis (spell??)

Solid Ankle Brace - Cassanova on Oct 12, 2010

This is a very sturdy ankle brace, but still has good flexibility. I like how you can strap it on really tight, but it doesn't hurt your feet. It gives good forward/backward mobility and limits (but doesn't totally eliminate) side to side movement. Also it is fairly quick to put on and take off. I used it for basketball and football and was able to run around just fine in it.

Just What I Needed - J. MONTOYA on Sep 25, 2010

I'm prone to turning my ankle while playing basketball and just coming back from a sprained ankle I needed the support. This product did the trick. I'm ordering another one for my other ankle. I've resisted wearing ankle supports because I was concerned it would slow me down but it wasn't the case at all. This product was perfect for stabilizing my ankle. I highly recommend it.

All The Bells And Whistles Without The Bulk - FastOrange on Jul 1, 2010

I got in a vehicle accident that left me with a small break in my ankle and most of the ligaments seriously sprained. After surgery, several fiberglass casts and an air splint I needed something for extra support. This brace works great! It takes a little time to get on, but provides really good support, tightness and is very adjustable. I find this provides better support and comfort than the doctor prescribed air splint that was double the price. It can easily be worn for a few hours but is uncomfortable for me all day long without taking it off for a break. The best part is how well it fits in shoes. It's basically like wearing a thick sock and i've fit it into even my slimmest shoes without a problem.

The sizing chart was spot on. Get one and don't waste your time with the cheaper ones...especially the neoprene junk.

Best Ankle Brace You Can Get - Marcus Pena on Jun 5, 2010

I wish I had found this a long time ago. It fits comfortable and is very durable. I highly recommend it if you have a weak or healing ankle and play sports.

Fits Well But Didn't Work For Achilles Bursitis - JB on Apr 25, 2010

I was able to wear it all day at work with no break in period. Would be great for sprained ankle support but didn't work well to support achilles bursitis.

Great Support - Shay Coker on Feb 11, 2010

I have been playing basketball for thirty years, and I needed something that would protect my ankles from rolling during games.

Once I figured out which direction all the bands went, this turned out to be a great solution. It is slimmer and much more comfortable than the Active Ankle, but still provides extraordinary support. Highly recommended.

Best Ankle Brace I Ever Used - Chad on Dec 31, 2011

I seem to sprain my left ankle every once in a while so I decided to buy this brace. It gives great support. I have worn it since my last sprain and I have not sprained my ankle since.

Nothing Less Than 5 Stars - V. Jungay on Dec 15, 2011

This product is amazing. I started running again after 1 yr, i didnt warm up properly and initially had a minor ankle ache, but it became so bad i couldn't walk for 2 days. I read reviews about this product and decided to buy and it was worth it. I always use it while running and its been a week and i no longer have any ankle sprains. Highly recommend to use this product if you have serious ankle issues. FYI, i have other McDavid products and they all are gr8.

Unmatched Support For Sprained Ankles - Jackson Teller on Dec 14, 2011

I recently rolled my ankle pretty bad and instead of resting it, I continued to play on it. It eventually got worse to the point where it hurt to walk. The doctor recommended I stay off it for 6 weeks. I thought that was a bit conservative and was back on the court in 4. I went through one practice using this brace just to make sure the ankle was ok and have played in 3 games since. It is very supportive - I wear them underneath the low top Zoom Kobe VI - and my ankle feels locked in as if it would take a very delibrate jerk to knock it out of whack again. It features velcro straps along each side meant to be adjustable without removing the shoe. I've found this to be unnecessary as it never really loosens throughout the game. But you may want to trim the straps short a bit - in my experience they are a bit long and scratch against the skin.

It Is Durable & Protective - Calvin on Dec 8, 2011

it works.
it keeps the ankle warm and helps loosen the ankle faster.
the extra binding helps the stability and looks clean after all is set to go.
highly recommended

Just What I Ordered - N. Jeffres on Dec 7, 2011

This product was just what my son wanted. This is probably the 5th or 6th time we have ordered these and each time they have arrived promptly and with no problems. My son does wear a size 15 shoe, but the large fits him just fine.

Strong Support - G9D on Dec 6, 2011

The figure 8 style straps are reminiscent of the wrap that athletic trainers apply on athletes prior to sporting events. The support is firm but not constrictive. I had no problem wearing sneakers with the wrap over a sock.

FANTASTIC ANKLE SUPPORT - Stevie G on Dec 3, 2011

I am 47 years old and wear a size 12 shoe. I ordered this ankle brace because I have stretched all the ligaments in both my ankles over many years of various sports and need support from time to time when my ankles bother me. I currently attend Tae Kwon Do classes and use the ankle braces for support during all the kicking drills. The brace is terrific. I have all the support I need and I hardly notice I have the brace on. I must point out (since I seen other mention that the support is difficult some when wearing shoes) that since I am using them in martial arts class that I wear no socks or shoes with the ankle support. I am very happy with this product and highly recommend.

Has Saved My Ankle Several Times - KY on Nov 22, 2011

I used to mildly or moderately sprain my ankle roll my ankle 2-3 times a year until I started wearing this ankle brace. I haven't sprained it since. The bottom is starting to wear away after almost a year of intense usage, but it's still effective.

Great Support. - J. Holt on Oct 18, 2011

I have been using this McDavid Ankle strap now for over three weeks. After breaking my ankle I could not stand to be put in a walking cast for 3 more weeks. I needed to be free!! I purchased this ankle support and having been wearing it to protect my ankle as it still is not fully healed. I have been able to skip the PT and walking cast and have had no issues. All thanks to McDavid and a strong will of not wanting to be in another cast/walking boot.

Fantastic Product - Doodler on Sep 30, 2011

This is THE must-have ankle brace for anyone who's ever experienced a severe (Grade II or III) ankle sprain. It's different than most you'll find in Big 5, Champs, or Dick's because of the two additional underside long wrap-over straps. Most generic braces sold in those stores have metal 'stays' or lack the side stirrups. These two support beams (strap/stirrup) take your ordinary laced ankle braces and turn it into ankle saving gold. I've personally used this brace in basketball, soccer, softball, and light running. It's vital during recovery periods where the active athlete is wavering between fully healthy and still injured. It adds the support needed to begin the mental and physical healing processes when coming back to 100%. It can feel a bit too sturdy at times, but the materials will loosen up a bit with use allowing for more fluidity. I've turned my ankle while wearing this brace and not had normal sprained ankle symptoms. Finally, I would suggest having another, slightly less sturdy brace do aid in full recovery. I use the McDavid Ankle with strap brace during initial recovery for several months. I then use a similar brace without the stirrups that provide better movement when ligaments are completely healed.

Feels Great. - Timothy Lang on Sep 29, 2011

I play a lot of tennis and football and recently got a pair of McDavid ankle braces to avoid rolling my ankles as I have in the past. I have tried similar ASO and Cramer ankle braces before, and this is by far my favourite. It's very comfortable and fits perfectly. It gives and incredible amount of support and the materials feel solid even though it is very lightweight; even more lightweight than the ASO. I'd recommend this to anyone who chronically rolls their ankles. It's better and cheaper than the ASO (Cramer isn't even in the same league) so if you are looking for rock solid ankle support for athletics, I'd say the McDavid is a no-brainer.

Great Stability And Lightweight - jpi on Sep 23, 2011

I like this brace a lot because it's so lightweight and provides great stability. It did take awhile to break it in - the top of my foot bruised and the back of my heel blistered. I don't think this is any different from any other ankle brace though. Also, the cross strips were too long and stuck up at the top when I put it on, so I had to cut it to prevent the coarse velcro side from chafing my calf. Besides needing to cut the figure 8 strip and breaking in the brace, the brace fits well and I'm very happy with my purchase.

Great Ankle Support, And I Had My Product In Three Business Days - Javi on Sep 17, 2011

This ankle support reinforces my ankle better than any other product I tried before. I recommend this product. I tried many ankle supports due to constant injuries and this the one I stick with.

Comfortable And Supportive - Alite on Aug 15, 2011

I rolled my ankle about six months ago and I started looking for an ankle brace that could support it so I could run. I saw this on amazon and ordered it because of all the good reviews it had.

After figuring out how to use it (it's a little more complicated than the ones you just slip on) I put it on and tested it out by going for a run. It supported my ankle extremely well and I had no ankle pain (this was about 2 weeks after I rolled my ankle) during my exercise session. It was comfortable and I could keep it on for a long duration, even when not exercising.

It is also very durable, after six months of constant use the only wear I've noticed is a slight tear in the back and one of the aglets (plastic tips) slipping off which I fixed with some athletic tape.

Overall it's a great product if you need some extra ankle/foot support.

Great! - jch551 on Aug 12, 2011

Amazing Product! I once tore a ligament in my right ankle and i was told by a doctor to wear an aircast everytime i wanna play ball. I decided to check this item out and it really exceeded my expectations.
Its comfortable and easy to put on. Great item to have, if you have bad ankles.

Great - Larry A. Hunter II " on Aug 11, 2011

Love these braces, right out the box they were perfect. I own a pair of ASK ankle braces. But they seem to add pressure to my achillis. With the McDavid I never had that problem, so that's why I love them.

Good Stability And Good Protection - Hsinhung Liu on Jul 27, 2011

The ankle brace provides excellent stability along with good proction. When I ball with it, there is absolutely zero uncomfotable.

Really Good Support- Really Hard To Take On & Off - Mark Rogers "Learned on Jul 4, 2011

This ankle support is truly the best I have come across. My damaged ankle rolls to the outside with even the slightest turn or slant, and this brace absolutely prevents it from rolling out to the point of more damage. With support under the foot and crossing the ankle and then up both sides- in addition to a snug inner sleeve that is adjusted with laces- this brace has wonderful support.

The bad news- and the only reason I give it less than 5 stars- is that it is a major pain in the, er, ankle, to get on and off and properly adjusted. Especially if your ankle is sore when you apply it, it can be a painful exercise to apply and remove. I can barely do it myself and struggle and sweat while trying. I get much better results with some help from a 2nd party (now I know why football teams have trainers that handle such things).

Overall, it does a great job- it's just a lot of work to get it on/off/adjusted.

Excellent Full Ankle Support - dbenbow on Jun 5, 2011

I purchased the McDavid Ankle brace after suffering a high left ankle injury in a skiing crash. I tried several different wraps, braces, etc. and found that most did not provide enough support above the ankle to help. The McDavid brace is the first I have tried that provided the combination of support and adjustment I needed. The brace is surprisingly lightweight and well made. It slides over your foot and laces from top to bottom. If you have significantly reduced range of up and down motion with your foot, the brace is a little difficult to put on without completely unlacing it. Two side straps wrap underneath the foot and Velcro on either side. A final strap wraps around the top of the ankle.

The brace almost can't be worn without a sock as the stitching and material will chafe and rub without one. Also, it might be a little bulky to wear with a pair of tightly fitting shoes. However, I have worn it with both running shoes and military boots without an issue. I wear a men's size 9-10 and the medium fit me perfectly.

Bottom Line: The overall support of the brace is fantastic and was exactly what I needed to help my ankle recover.
