Editorial Reviews
Pillowy soft velour, cotton and padding soothe tired eyes, block light and stay in place with adjustable elastic straps. Hand washable with mild soap and water. Blue or black. Light blocking fabric and cushioned padding soothe tired eyes Adjustable elastic straps keep mask in place Hand washable with mild soap and water

This eye mask solves both of those. The connector at the back isn't velco, it's the real thing. It's not a cheap connector. And although I was worried because the lower part of the mask was heavier, I see they had to do this to block light. Unlike the expensive Sharper Image mask I bought, the heavier area is still very thin and doesn't cause a problem when I sleep on my side or face (yes, I often wake up face down, and not on the pavement.)
If your intention is to own a TOTALLY light blocking eye mask that won't be uncomfortable in different sleep position, well, this is it. And I'm darn anal about my eye masks.
For me, the good:
- Comfortable
- Good strap
- Price
The not so good:
- I have a pretty big head, so the strap is most of the way out.
- I toss and turn and this comes off easier than the airline mask, surprisingly.
- The mask has to be positioned perfectly to not leak a little light and after some toss/turn, it will move some.
The net is that I am pleased and would buy it again. I do plan to browse masks at local stores to see if I can find something that I would like even more.
1. You sleep on your side
2. You have difficulty breathing through your nose when you sleep
3. You have eyebrows
First of all, the mask wraps onto the sides of your head, so it's uncomfortable to lay on your side. You may find yourself shifting around at first. But, you'll eventually get to sleep.
Next, the big puffy cushion at the bottom is effective at keeping light out once you position it correctly, but it will also put pressure on your nostrils. This will be very bothersome if you have difficulty breathing through your nose at night. Make sure to wear your Breathe Right strips.
Finally, when I woke up, my eyebrows hurt. The mask, huge as it is, covers your eyebrows. As a result, it rubs your eyebrow hairs all night, shifting them around. After several hours of this, the eyebrows ache. This was the biggest problem. "The mask sure keeps the light out, but is this aching sensation worth it?!!"
Also, because this thing is so large and puffy, it will push on your eyes. When you blink, your eyelashes and lids will be rubbing against the mask.
If someone would design a comfortable pair of blacked-out swim goggles, I'd rather wear those. This thing is like wearing a pillow on your face with a strap.
No more. The Lewis N. Clark Comfort Eye Mask has several features that really help it get the job of blocking light done. Its most important virtue is the cushion of fabric below the eyes to the sides of the nose. Most sleep masks are held up by my nose such that there's a space on either side. The Lewis N Clark mask can block out 100% of the light there, at least as far as I can tell. Occasionally, I will roll over or something and the tiniest bit of light will come in (still much less than would come in under a regular mask) -- so the mask is not God, but I think we all knew that. Second, the mask wraps around pretty far on the sides of the face to make sure light is blocked from those angles. And finally, unlike other masks that eventually become too loose, the adjustable elastic band on this one lets you tighten the mask to keep every part of it pressed to your face. It can get too tight, but that is of course a sign that you should loosen it, and I find you'll still be in darkness. I assume the band on this mask will eventually weaken, but then you just tighten it! And when it finally gives out altogether, I'll just buy another one. It's great and it's cheap.
My only regret is that I have but two thumbs to put up for this mask.
Also, it's kind of warm (very padded), so summertime without A/C is less fun.
I was pleasantly surprised when this mask worked for both of us. It's comfortable, and no light leaks through around the edges.
We're very happy, and will really appreciate them while we're tent camping in Alaska this summer (darned midnight sun!).
I chose this mask based on its great reviews and price. After a few nights of use I am indeed very pleased. I LOVE that the clasp is not velcro. Instead it is a well-made insert clasp, and is fully and easily adjustable. This means that as the masks is worn and the straps begin to wear, you'll still be able to tighten it to comfort. The mask itself is very soft and is made with a cushiony row of padding on the interior, right above where your nose would fit. This cushion does an excellent job of keep out light, and also raises the mask in such a position as to pad around your eyes rather than squishing them. I mean I see *nothing,* even when using it during the day. I'm not sure I would describe the fabric as "velour," as the description does, but it is very light, soft, and comfortable.
I deducted one star because of the incredible lint-attracting qualities of the fabric. I mean this thing picks up lint like no other. I'd rather have the exterior neutral-toned than change the fabric in any way, and the only colors I saw for this mask were both dark, so I'm not sure that is avoidable.
All in all, great comfort for great sleep. I would definitely repurchase.
Dream Essentials Sweet Dreams Contoured Sleep Mask
Pros:
* Does a good job of blocking light
* The contoured design doesn't put any pressure on the eyes, if the mask stays in place
* Comfortable material
Cons:
* The elastic strap kept riding down and onto my ears. It felt like it was cutting into my ears.
* The nose opening is too low, causing the mask, and thus the eye sockets, to ride up, defeating the purpose of the contoured eye socket.
* Not good for side sleepers as the mask does dislodge
* Cheap feeling pouch
I wanted to like this mask based on all the positive reviews, but ultimately the bad position of the elastic strap, and the fact that it kept riding up on my face, were what made me give up on it. I didn't have it long enough to verify the delamination that others had experienced.
Lewis N. Clark Comfort Eye Mask
Pros:
* Does a decent job of blocking light when it stays in place
* While not great for side sleepers, it was better than the other two
Cons:
* Like wearing a tight fleece jacket around the eyes.
* As the night progressed, the elastic strap slipped down and felt like it was cutting into my ears
* Nose opening is way too low, causing the mask to ride up and thus allowing light in from the bottom
I would have settled for this one had I not found the Macks Dreamweaver, but like the Sweet Dreams mask, the elastic strap cutting into my ears was the determining factor. I liked this one slightly better than the Sweet Dreams because it did seem to stay in place a bit better.
Macks Dreamweaver Contoured Sleep Mask (Pack of 2)
Pros:
* Blocks light the best of the three masks
* Nose opening is at the right height
* Contoured eye sockets are large enough to accommodate some movement
* Comfortable material
* Has two, slim, adjustable elastic straps instead of one large one
* Does not cut into the tops of the ears
* For about the same price as one of the other masks, you get two of these
Cons:
* If you are a side sleeper or move around, like the other masks, it will move, but it was still comfortable, even after moving.
* The material is basically identical to the Sweet Dreams mask, which makes me wonder if it will delaminate like people have found with the Sweet Dreams, but I haven't used it for more than a few weeks now. So far, no delamination. But if there is, a second one came with it.
While the Dreamweaver isn't perfect, given the fact that it won't stay in place with movement (Do any masks stay in place all night?!), it was the best of the three. The comfortable positioning of the eye sockets, nose opening and two straps make this the winner.
Beware, once you start wearing one of these, you will not be able to sleep without one. I know I can't. It's good to keep a spare. I'm getting a few more of these.
The only challenge I have had with it is sleeping on my side. Because the perimiter of the mask, particularly on the bottom, has some bulk, it seems like it pushes into the eyeball when I am on my side.
Nonetheless, I am very happy with it. I would definitely buy it again.
All four of them are a vast improvement over sleeping without a mask, as I am quite light-sensitive. However, there are differences.
I tried the Sweet Dreams Mask first and initially liked it a lot. The carrying bag is flimsy and I have better ear plugs than the ones they give, but the mask worked well. It is molded to the nose and eyes so you open your eyes without having your lashes brush against the mask. This seemed cool at first but really is not that important compared to other qualities. I used the mask every day for about four months, and was satisfied, although, as in most masks a little light come through around the nose. But then I noticed that it was coming apart. The layers of material were separating and I could see the mask was not going to last much longer. So I bought the other three in order to decide which worked best for me.
The Lights Out Contoured Mask is also shaped around the nose and eyes. It did a very adequate job, and I probably would be more enthusiastic about it except that I felt the Dream Zone and Lewis N Clark masks were superior to it. Both of these have extra pillow material under the eyes, so they block out light better and are very comfortable. The Dream Zone mask is soft and pillowy throughout, with a satin exterior and soft cotton interior. It is incredibly comfortable, and I sink into sleep as it floats over my face. The Lewis N Clark also has those pillows under the eyes, and is a bit tighter fit with perhaps a tiny bit better light reduction. Both of these masks give me a great night's sleep, and I alternate in thinking I prefer one over the other. Sometimes I switch back and forth from night to night. Meanwhile, I have brought the Lights Out Contour Mask to my office for when I take naps there, and the Sweet Dreams Mask is around as a backup, not having totally fallen apart yet.
John Rice
It's great for sleeping in strange places, also for when my husband wants to stay up and I want to go to bed. I honestly never thought light was such a sleep distraction but it definitely is. I sleep soo much better now that I use this mask.
My only gripe is it doesn't stay on very well. I wake up every single night with it off and have to put it back on depending on what time it is. I am a side sleeper, but I don't toss and turn that much that it should come off.
Overall the mask feels like a soft, conforming pillow for your eyes. Quite soothing.
Cons: Light at the bottom gets in, although it's not too much. Static electricity will mess your hair up when putting the mask on.
It is a bit warm to wear in summer.
Lastly, of 3 masks I've tried, this is probably the best.
They have a comfortable strap that doesn't pinch the hairline or the back of your ears, and the plush material rest comfortably above the eyes.
Would recommend to everybody except to the most nit-picky light sleepers.
If you adjust the strap tightly enough so that the mask seals out all light, it presses a bit uncomfortably to the eyelids, and impedes REM sleep. Or, if you loosen the strap enough so it doesn't press on the eyelids, much light gets in (mostly from the bottom).
Also, it is rather bulky, so if you sleep on your side, it presses uncomfortably on your face.
There are also two, relatively minor, drawbacks (but these things are highly personal, so they may bother you more than I).
The strap has a hard plastic guide which, if you sleep on your back, presses against the back of the head. Also, the material is such that it doesn't completely block out light; that is, if you're using it in a very bright room you'll get a sort of very dark "grayish haze" rather than complete blackness.
With this eye mask and my Howard Leight ear plugs, I'm actually sleeping eight hours a night now. I would never have thought that possible.
it blocks about 90% of out side light out thats good enough for me . along with other sleep tips you
can greatly improve your sleep. like going to bed at the same time, stop drinking 2/hr before bed. go to the
bathroom right before bed, things to eat and drink 2/hr before bed are cherry juice , oat meal , eggs, almonds ,
chia seeds , these things will help produce deep sleep. eat light at night , and stop eating 2/hr before bed.
hope this will help . i would buy this again.
If your ability to fall asleep is disturbed by lights and movement, or you have trouble turning off your brain, then try this mask! It will definitely help you to relax!
