The Reliamed Heating Pad is a heavy-duty piece of equipment. The pad is well made and the covering is constructed of tightly woven flannel. The pad is large and for me extends from my shoulder to nearly my fingertips. Taller individuals will not obtain that amount of area coverage, but will still find this one of the larger pad areas available. The cord is not the typical flimsy electric cord found on most commercially available heating pads, but is the thick, round type found on professional products; the plug is three-pronged. The digital control is easy to use and easy to reset. It beeps once, softly, when it is turned on and five times as it shuts off; the quiet beeping is important if you use this at night and sleep with someone who wakens easily.
There are two minor things I feel could be improved; however, they are not serious enough to cause me to give this item a lower rating. There is a piece of velcro attached to one side of the cover which is in the middle of the cover. If you do not wrap the pad around the body part being warmed, it gets in the way when you be lying on the pad. The longer velcro piece extends beyond the top of the pad and also gets in the way. I have not cut it off because there is always a chance someone might need to wrap this around their lower back. However, the size of the pad and the amount of velcro attached would limit the individual's size to less than a 37-inch waist circumference. The second issue is that the pad heats about ten degrees beyond the set temperature when first turned on. My therapist recommended a temperature of 108 for my problem which means this initially heats to 118 degrees before dropping down to the correct temperature. I have found that by turning the heating pad on about five minutes before I am going to lay down, I can have it heat up and reliably drop to the correct temperature before I need it.
If you are in need of a longer or professional grade heating pad, you cannot go wrong purchasing a Reliamed. My therapist liked it so well, she is purchasing several for her clinic. Had I not found a Christmas special, I would have purchased at Amazon as their price and customer service are outstanding.
The suggestions I have for the manufacturer are: 1) Make the timer longer than 60 minutes - 120 or 180 at least. Just as I am about to get to sleep or have just gotten to sleep, it goes off and because I am not in a deep sleep the pain wakes me up again. 2) In addition to the unit turning off after 60 minutes, it emits 5 sharp beeps before it turns off. If I wasn't awake when it turned off, I am after hearing the beeps! Fortunately I most often use a fan at night, so it covers the sound of the beebs. 3) Add a night light to the control panel so that when you have to turn it back on and/or reset it in the night, you don't need to turn on a light to do it. 4) Lose the velcro straps. I would imagine they are not long enough to go around the mid section of most people who use this product anyway. Also, as I said, the heating pad is wide enough to completely roll over from side to side and stay on the heating pad. I cut the velcro strap off, but the strap it attaches to is sewn on and can't easily be taken off.
However, despite these minor manufacturing issues, I would still give it 5 stars!
This heating pad works well, but if you ever plan of falling asleep with it on (especially with someone else in the room sleeping as well), keep the following in mind:
1) You must set a time limit, between 1 and 60 minutes. It will not work any longer than the time limit you set; however, you may reset or increase the time up to a max of 60 minutes at any time.
2) When the time limit expires and the unit is going to automatically shut off, it beeps 3 times (about a second between each beep). If you are not a heavy sleeper, this will wake you up.
3) Turning the power on/off or increasing/decreasing the time or temperature in a quiet room at night is not a silent process. The controller beeps every time ANY button is pressed, including the power button (except when the controller is locked to prevent accidental changes).
FYI:
The pad is 14-inches in height and 27-inches in length. It can easily rollup or fold over when the crease is going up and down the height, but cannot rollup or fold down the length of the pad. This is because the pad has several semi-flexible flat rods (kind of like the boning found in a bra or corset), like a ladder.
The semi-flexible flat rods prevent the pad from completely conforming to your body. The instructions state that the moist-heat feature of the pad works best on bare skin contact. Depending on the contours of your body, the targeted location and if moist-heat is one of your requirements, you may need to weigh down the pad using your hand, arm or something else to get better contact. Keep in mind that the instructions also state that the pad should not be covered, like with a blanket, so the pad's cover can capture moisture in the air.
The heating pad is meant drape you; you are not supposed to lie down or sit on the pad.
The overall length of the power cord is a little over 6 feet (approximately 1.5 feet from the heating pad to the hand controller, and approximately 4.5 feet from the hand controller to the plug). It has a non-polarized plug (2 prongs instead of 3).
By default, the temperature and timer settings are incremented/decremented 1-degree or minute at a time each time the up or down button is presses. For example, to increase the temperature by 4-degrees, you must press the up button 4 times.
If you press and hold the up or down button while changing the temperature, the setting will first go up/down 2-degrees, and then in 9-degree increments until you release the button. For example, if you press and hold the up button starting at 86-degrees (the lowest temp available), the temperature will skip to 88-degrees, then 97-degrees, then 107-degrees, and so on (up to a maximum of 166-degrees).
If you press and hold the up or down button while changing the timer, the setting will first go up/down 1-minute, and then in 5-minute increments until you release the button. For example, if you press and hold the up button starting at 1-minute, the timer will skip to 2-miutes, then 7-minutes, then 12-minutes, and so on (up to a maximum of 60-minutes).
As long as the heating pad remains plugged in, it conveniently retains your last temperature and timer settings. When the heating pad loses power, the temperature defaults to 122-degrees and the time defaults to 15-minutes.
TheraTherm was a cheapest but it was just low/medium temp heating pad that you can fall asleep on without fear of burning. It was just for home use only.
The second brand, Thermopore was better than TheraTherm. But I did not like the switch which one need to be hold down with my one hand. Once I release it, it stop heating.
Come on!!! We are in year 2010. People watching LCD TVs at home. I don't find a super heavy-thicky CRT TVs anymore. Why the THERMOPORE heating pad is still 100% on-off manually by THUMB? Is THERMOPORE means THUMB MORE POOR? Someone suggested use a rubber band to hold the on -off switch. But I think it was not a safe idea. Also it doesn't maintain the same temp. After a year(Warranty just expired) 2 of 6 that I purchased were stop working.
So I decided to look for a professional grade one at this time. And I found this one, ReliaMed heating pad at Amazon.com. It solved all the problems I had with others on the day I received.
With LCD... 2010 LCD control not 20th centry 'THUMB-MORE-POOOR' switch, I was able to set the timer 1~60 minutes(Thank God, I did not have to hold anything). Also temp control with safe lock button was smart. LCD was letting me know the current temp and target temp. The LCD control is so logical and easy. AND IT WORKS SO FAST AND REACHED 160 DEGREE. Even the pad itself has little dots all over so it made perfect contact with cover. How smart! The size was perfect for shoulder, thigh and legs.
No more bothering with other brands that never really get the job done. This is the only proffessional grade moist heating pad I've ever used.
Upon receiving the item I immediately could see the difference in quality between this and other heating pads that I have previously owned. Every aspect such as the heavy duty cable, lcd and especially the pad and cover itself is excellent.
If you need a heating pad for theraputic reasons you will not regret this purchase.
If you are thinking about this purchase consider these aspects before dismissing it on price:
Excellent Quality
Large size
Moist heat element built into product (no need to wet a pad and place it into a sleeve like other cheap pads)
High thermal temperature up to 166 degrees
LCD control for temperature and time

Concerns - Most of my concerns were immediately alleviated upon using this product but there are still some very minor flaws that could be remedied either in design or after purchase.
Some users have been annoyed with the velcro strap, to this end I have been able to use it as a wrap for my shoulder and neck. However for other body parts it may be too small or large. You can easily rig an adjustable velcro strap solution for this or remove it from the product if it irritates you.
The one year warranty seemed paltry considering the price of the product but I was able to purchase an extended warranty with accidental damage for about 11 dollars. The one year warranty also seems standard for these types of products.

While I am very happy with my purchase, I was further impressed by the excellent customer service of the seller. When the price of the product dropped on amazon as the seller sent me a check for the price differential upon request and was very quick to respond.
Unlike most of today's warming pads, this one gets hot. Some of the cheap ones on high would be put to shame by an electric blanket.
I can only add one observation for those wanting a simple on/off function or illuminated display :
Until the heating pad is physically unplugged from the wall, the controller "remembers" the last temperature
and time set point programmed into the controller. Have you fallen asleep at night and it turns off at the end of the timing cycle ? Simply press the on/off switch and it will repeat the last cycle ..... no need to turn on the lights.
Had enough heating part way through the cycle ? Hit the power on/off switch to interrupt the cycle early. Come back 3 or 4 hours later and hit the on/off switch to resume the original cycle.
This one deserves all the 5 stars it gets.
This heating pad is so comfortable to use that I've taken to using it every time I lie on my couch, whether or not my aches and pains are nagging me.
The only annoying thing about this pad is the controller which takes a few minutes to figure out how to use and emites beeps at regular intervals as the pad's timer cuts off, etc. I wish that this pad had a setting where it could just be turned on or off and could be set to a default temperature.
However, this pad is so nice to have that I would have given it six stars if I could, so despite the annoying controller, I still give five stars to this heating pad.
Otherwise, I love it.
A brief overview of my medical history: In 2008, I was diagnosed with cancer, and 1 year later, I was in remission. I am now in a great amount of pain (again) and trying to find ways to treat the pain outside of pain meds. I would say buy it, as it is a great product but definitely be aware of the timer and temperature. Ask yourself if those are items you can deal with. If not, look for something else. If yes, then go for it. :)
What a great decision. You can tell as soon as you take the heating pad out of its packaging that this is not your mother's heating pad. It's much larger and heavier than the CVS pad. It has digital settings by which you can select the temperature and length of heating time. The pad goes up to 166 degrees.
Buy this. You won't be sorry.
If you're looking for a heating pad, look no further and purchase this one. You won't be sorry.
Pros:
* Temp and time are quick and easy to setchange everything
* Lock feature keeps you from accidentally resetting it
* Heats very evenly
* Removable cover is so nice it's almost cuddly, and stays on well
Nitpicks (not really bad enough to be cons):
* The cord is a bit short
* The control is a little cryptic at first
UPDATE: 1/3/2012: BUYER BEWARE--this is a great pad if it is working. Problem is dealing with replacing a defective one. I contacted the seller YES MEDICAL--they responded quickly but basically told me they could/would not help me. Sent me to manufacturer -- I have emailed them four times now and they never respond. YES MED. tells me to call them and be prepared for a 5-10 min hold. I want to deal w/them in writing so there are NO MISUNDERSTANDINGS. Remember: a product is only as GOOD as the CUSTOMER SUPPORT. This is up there with the "WORST" CS experiences I have ever had. This was recommended to my by medical professionals during orthopaedic surgery. I explained how desperate I was to replace this to both YES MED. and the manuafacturer. OH well, sure the doc will think twice now when suggesting this. aslo the PT people.
UPDATE: Started having issues with it malfunctioning six wks into having it--two months later it has completely stopped working.
original review: i have severely arthritic knees and have a hard time dealing with the constant pain--will have TKR and hope to use this pad during recovery. My complaints: the pad is heavy and the weight actually causes pressure and some pain. Does not have an illuminated dial on the control and is hard to see unless in full light. I use it without lights some so I would greatly appreciate the ability to see the control for regulating temp etc. The pad is very efficient and the heat and moisture are the best I have used.
It is heavier than the types found in pharmacy and big-box stores, and drapes
nicely...this gives more uniform coverage. It also does not "bunch" and stays flat
(after using for 10 months) without "crunching" up. I have also used special pads
from Canada designed with hard ceramic plates, for use in pro football purportedly,
and very expensive.
This beats them by a mile.
The only think I don't like is the 1 hour maximum heat cycle but this is offset by
precise temperature control, and rapid heat-up.
Just bought another one today for my wife...we are in our 60's and she has tennis
related joint problems, and my joint problems are from VN and other swubsequent
injuries over the years.
This is my first written recommendation on Amazon after being on the site almost daily
over the past 5 years.
The bodymed heating pad gets hot, it's big and heavy (almost too heavy for my feet and shins, but worth it) I hate the velcro strap and velcro attachment area. I ended up sticking the entire thing in a pillowcase and no more scratchy velcro pad. The bodymed is easily adjusted for temperature and time- one hour then it automatically shuts off. Did I mention it actually gets hot? I love it, my back loves it, my legs love it- I have restless leg syndrome sometimes, and I get leg cramps, an aspirin and a heating pad are the best solutions I've found.
