Apex Pocket Med Pack with 7 Day Tray

Then grandma saw it and commented that it was perfect for her larger pills she takes twice daily so I bought one for her. Now her friends are all over it and wanting one!
Positives:
1 - It is large enough to hold all my pills, even the large ones.
2 - It is easy to identify the day and see if the pills have been used.
Negatives:
1 - The lid is heavier than the bottom so when I fill them, the bottom is at an angle and the pills can role out.
2 - There is only one lid covering both of the two sides. Therefore, in the morning I cannot just tip it over into my hand. Since I have to take the pills out with my fingers and the pills are different sizes, the small pills fall out or to the pills on the night side. It also takes away the time advantage I thought I was getting.
3 - It is not very compact.
The negatives are very large for me and I will look for another solution. I do not travel for a day or two so taking the individual pods is not an advantage to me.
1. I always load my pills at the beginning of the week like an assembly like. So I lined up each of the pill container pods on my countertop and opened them all. They immediately TIPPED BACKWARDS TO REST ON THE HINGE (each lid making a 45 degree angle with the countertop). This made filling each pod impossible without picking each one up and manually filling one, closing it again (so they don't fall out when I set it back down, picking up another bottle of pills, and repeating the process. With my old system, I could open all the days and fill all of them. I ended up trying to prop the back lid against a wall but since they are so slippery and oval shaped, they tended to slide back down).
THIS IS WHAT SHOULD BE FIXED: THE LOWER LID SHOULD BE HEAVIER THAN THE UPPER LID SO IT CAN REST FLAT AND HAVE A LOWER CENTER OF GRAVITY. ADDITIONALLY, THERE SHOULD BE A RUBBER PAD OR LOW FRICTION SURFACE UNDER THE LOWER LID TO DECREASE TIPPING AND SLIDING.
2. It's unbelievable that each compartment (morning and evening) does not have it's own lid. WOW. Taking out the morning pills is difficult without the PM pills spilling out too. Also, when filling them, AM and PM pills can easily fall into the other compartment (or fall out of the pod).
FIX: MAKE TWO SEPARATE LIDS PLEASE!!
3. I don't consider myself "elderly" but these are SLIPPERY CONTAINERS. They often slip out of my hands and with meds inside, this is dangerous for losing pills (you absolutely don't want any falling on the floor with kids or pets around).
4. The lids do not reassure me that they are closed securely. Opens too eaily. No nice snap sound. Furthermore, the opening mechanism is such that you need to lift the left tab upwards while the right tab downwards. I could not figure out how to open it for a short while and this requires some small amount of dexterity (again, perhaps not best for some people).
So good concept, needs improvement. I am a 5 stars or 1 star person, but the most I could give this is 1.5 to 2 stars.
The plastic of the pill boxes is quite sturdy but - as I realize it is just *plastic* - I make sure not to put the pods into a situation where they may be crushed easily (like a large purse alongside heavy objects). I have read reviews about the pods breaking, which makes me wonder if those who received the fragile pods had either heat damaged or poorly-molded pods. These seem quite sturdy. The only thing that worries me a little is the plastic tab that holds the lids on each container. Each compartment (separated by a plastic divider) is about 1 1/4" wide by 1 1/2" long by 1/2" deep.
The only thing keeping this product from getting five stars is the fact that the AM/PM slots lack independent lids. This can be a problem if handling the pods either half asleep or in a vehicle.
I would not recommend this for the elderly. Whereas these work for me fine (I'm in my 20s), I can see why the pods/boxes would be difficult for someone with an uneasy grasp and poor eyesight. Though if you buy this set and find it unsuitable for Grandma, these make fantastic back-up boxes for those who suffer from headaches, indigestion, or remembering to take your meds during allergy season or bouts of the flu.
This Apex model organizer is a premium choice among the rest of the crowd. The organizer comes with individual pods in a tray that are both labeled and color coded. So the most you can manage to spill at one time is what you are supposed to be taking, and nothing more. The pods are rounded and comfortable to hold, and are split in two pieces by a divider for morning and night time doses. And, at about 2 1/2" in diameter, they are generous enough in size to handle quite a few medications as once, both day and night. As someone that quite often was chasing his medication around the floor as noted previously, I still thoroughly enjoy picking up my daily pod and having the luxury of it being a single carry along model. Personally I would never use any other type of pill organizer after using this one for a couple of years now.
In conclusion, I have never seen this style organizer in stores locally. I got mine on another online site. (And paid a little more for it there unfortunately). So if you are one that feels its time to treat yourself to an upgrade in your pill organization system, I highly recommend this Apex model that is a true pleasure to use. The only one downside to this organizer that is worth noting is that it may be a little on the small side if you happen to take a whole bushel of pills every day. If that is the case, than may I suggest the 7 day organizer at the link provided. I have seen this other one before and each of the compartments on it are a little roomier than this model. More cumbersome and not as comfy to hold, but definitely better for larger regimens. For small to medium regimens, ( a generous medium), I highly recommend the Apex pill organizer 7 Day Pill Box Organizer 2 Deep Compartments Clear Tray Made in the USA
The seller is fine, shipped it fast, etc. No problems there.
It was just a little cheaply made for being over 6 dollars. The main issue is it the little pill containers don't stay latched very well. Considering the cost of medication, I really need a container that stays latched, losing meds I can barely afford as it is, is not an option for me.
This device only works as a stationary pill holder/organizer, and you better be careful when you pick it up, because they come open VERY easily.
Sigh... I'll use it until I find something better.
I have to put the containers in a sandwhich baggy to be on the safe side. That way when they come open I don't lose my meds.
However this product arrived with one of the small tabs used to open the "pods" broken.
Then other tabs began to break off as I opened each one for the first time.
It's possible to open the pods without the tabs, but the product is so flimsy that I wouldn't trust them not to open accidentally in my bag.
Buy something else.
The only suggestion for improvement would be to devise a way for containers to stay open and lay flat... of course, I am not sure how!!!
With that said, based on poor experiences with other med dispenser trays, I definitely recommend this one. Just take your time filling and stacking them back in the tray!
All the best,
Jay
Things she liked:
1) She found the boxes easy to hold and open.
2) The individual (separate) boxes were more convenient than a large, all-week box.
3) The brightly-colored tray sat conveniently on a counter, helping to remind her to take her pills.
Things she did not like:
1) The fact that the AM & PM sides of the tray share a common lid meant that opening and pouring the AM pills into her hand really didn't work - it was too hard to keep the PM pills from spilling out at the same time.
2) Bumping the weekly organizer too easily caused the days to fall out.
3) While the product description says that it can "hold up to 25 tablets or pills," capsules quickly fill up the daily trays.
So, that's it, it has its positives and negatives. In general, though, she does like it, and uses it every day for her medications.
(Review of Apex Pocket Med Pack with 7 Day Tray)
The packs are large and deep enough to fit all of my pills (even the big ones), with a divider for morning and afternoon. And it's still thin and slender enough to toss in a backpack or bag, or even a front pants pocket, without anyone being able to tell.
It's a fantastic product. Probably the only thing that could be improved in the future is to perhaps make the bottom of the individual cases heavier so they don't tilt when you are loading them, but I really haven't had any problems with that. If you need a daily pill case that's easy to use and will fit almost any size of pills, this is the product for you.
But with his arthritic hands he had difficulty handling the little pocket pods. The pod dimensions are about 2-1/2"L x 2"W x 3/4"D and surprisingly stable within the tray. The corners are rounded--perfect for carrying--but they are not easy for stiff fingers to grip, to open, or to hold steady while filling or dispensing. His initial remark was that it would be better if they were square. While he must exercise great care in filling and opening the pods, he is using this little dispenser quite successfully. In hindsight even though it costs more than twice as much I probably should have bought 7 Day 4 Compartment Pill Organizer DEEP One Inch. It's likely I didn't see it because it was not prime eligible.
This dispenser really is a good idea! Load the little boxes and put them in your purse or pocket and you're off! But for someone who has difficulty using their hands, this is not recommended.
I fill them up, he takes that days pills with him to work and grabs the next pack the next morning. Works great.
The packets lock nice. You don't have to worry about them coming open as they lock well. The whole unit is small enough to leave sitting out with out taking up too much space. It's not bad looking either. The colors chosen are nice.
So again if you take a lot of stuff or have big pills I wouldn't buy it. If you just have a few things to take and would like the convenience of grabbing one days pills I highly recommend this.
Also if I'm away from home in the evening I just take the case with me.
It stays closed for security and is small enough to fit in my shirt pocket.
WHAT I FOUND DISAPPOINTING: I really hoped that the am/pm sections would open separately but they don't. One lid opens up to 2 sections: am/pm. It's workable but adding 2 separate lids would be a GREAT enhancement! Also, the containers are WAY bigger than I'd expected. If you have a ton of pills to take, this is great news but if not...try for something smaller.
I think the design could use some work. I really expected the AM and PM to be seperated and the pills do get mixed up. Next when you open them to fill them the top is heavier and they tip over while filling. I have to go to extra trouble of trying to set up an arrangement where the lids are held in place against a magazine etc before filling.
I'm not happy with this purchase and if I'd not already opened them and given half of them away I would definately send them back.
In response to what another reviewer wrote, if you lean the open sections against an edge, they lay flat so that you can fill them easily. The only drawback is that when you open the individual section both the am and pm sections are open at once.
This product looks like it will work just fine when I need to take my pills along somewhere. The sections snap shut and don't look as if they will open in my purse,(to be sure, I can always place them in a zip lock bag) and yet are easy to open so they won't bounce out upon opening.
All in all, I'm very satisfied with my purchase.
