Editorial Reviews
For the cleansing of nasal passages according to the traditional practice of NETI. Clear the nostrils to free breathing. Remove excess mucous. Reduces pollen or allergens in nasal passages. Heavy-duty construction - dishwasher safe. Crafted from sturdy, lead-free ceramic and coated with food-grade sealant glaze. The practice of nasal irrigation, known as Neti, has been used by practitioners of Yoga and Ayurveda in India for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Neti is one of the six purification techniques undertaken prior to the practice of yoga texts known as the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Gheranda Samhita. Some yoga teachers consider it valuable in cleansing the energy channels and balancing the right and left hemispheres to create radiant, energetic health and wellness, which is the foundation upon which true yoga practice can come to fruition. Ancient Secrets Nasal Cleansing Pot is the ideal answer for cleansing nasal passages. This gentle and effective technique of nasal irritation is widely recommended by health practitioners worldwide as a wonderful way to improve your overall feeling of well-being and maintain radiant, vibrant health. Many people practice Neti on a daily basis to keep their sinuses clean and improve their ability to breathe freely. Most find it a soothing and pleasant practice once they try it. If you are one of the many people who find that your nasal passages are blocked as a result of the effects of pollution, dust, pollen and other irritants, you may find this simple cleansing technique of invaluable benefit to you. Note: This information and the Nasal Cleansing Pot are not intended to diagnose, treat, prevent or cure any disease and these statements have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. If you are suffering from any disease or illness, please be sure to consult your health care practitioner. Made in China.

I've found that I have gotten natural relief through the daily cleaning out my sinuses. And it feels great not to need a pill to breathe. Who knew cleaning my nose with warm water and a little salt was the solution. The drug companies know and would rather us use their products than this inexpensive natural way.
I recommend this to anyone suffering from allergies. It is odd at first, but you'll get used to it and your body will thank you.
But once I saw it, it didn't look that bad. So, my first sinus infection, I ran to the health food store to buy one. I normally drink a vinegar and honey solution (2tbs vinegar, 1 tbs honey) in a glass of water (it works like guaifensin) to thin the mucus and I don't need a neti pot. This time the sinus infection was bad. I blew my nose so much that the outside of my nose was irritated, because my mucus was too thick to come out. The neti pot saved me. I could not believe that it would bring out more green mucus at the end, even though I could not previously blow my nose and get anything else out. And this was the plug that normally stays there and keeps the infection going strong. Once I did this, I could breathe!!!
This is an amazing product! My 11 yr old daughter who constantly complains of a headache, tried it too, and says her headache is gone.
If it doesn't work for you, you are doing something wrong. Keep trying. I think it's more effective if the water is warm enough but not too much so that it is uncomfortable.
But after mowing the lawn or doing any work outside, I make sure the first thing I do is a round of the neti! Clears me out and keeps any sneezing fits from ever happening.
You do not have to purchase any mixture to put into your water. Using a pinch of non iodized salt in the water works just as well. Iodized salt will burn terribly.
I have a much easier time with the Neti pot made by the Himalayan Institute. Amazon carries those as well.
WHY I LIKE THIS ONE: I have used this and the Himalayan one and have known friends with multiple designs of neti pots. I don't spill any water out of the top with this one. Also, the handle is comfortable to handle when I use, clean, and store it. The ceramic material is durable. This design is easily approachable for the new user.
HOW TO USE IT (you should really follow the instructions provided with the neti pot): To use a neti pot, you need to fill it with water and salt. The amount of salt will differ with neti pots, but is usually around 1/4 tsp. of non-iodized granulated salt (I never measure anymore). Lean over a sink and tilt your head to one side (not like you are looking down, but as though you are stretching your neck on one side) and insert the spout into the nostril closest to the ceiling (if you tilt your left side to your left shoulder, hold the pot in your right hand and insert into right nostril). Wait until all of the water empties from the other nostril, gently blow your nose, and repeat on other side.
MY METHOD (this was passed on to me from a friend and I was slow to catch on, but now this is the way I mix it): I use an electric kettle to heat purified water. I clean the neti pot very well both before and after use with hot water (if you use a dishwasher, I would rinse it off first anyway because I don't believe the harsh, chlorinated soap is good for you). I add the salt to the pot and pour about 1 inch of HOT water into the pot, stirring with a very small utensil (like a measuring spoon). This melts the salt really well! Then, I fill it with cool water to bring it to room temperature. If the water is too cold or too hot, it will feel uncomfortable; I first test it with my finger, then if it seems okay I will pour a little onto the tip of my nose. If it feels right there, it is.
If I am in a hurry, I will use half the pot for each side; if not, I use the whole pot for one side, blow, then refill in the same manner. NOTE: I have found that the water goes through MUCH better if I always start with a particular side, then do the other (it won't go through if I start with the other first!). If one side is stuck, give it a try anyway, and then you can blow your nose gently. Then see if it will go through the other side, then later redo the first side.
Some people can snort salt water, but not me: My nervous system says, "Knock it off, idiot! You're drowning!" But with the Neti I can breathe through my mouth when I use it(which is now a morning ritual when I get up). AND FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE I CAN REMEMBER, I HAVE NOT HAD A SINUS INFECTION FOR OVER A YEAR!!!! And I have not been sick once! And I saved a dozen co-pays for care and meds! And I am off allergy meds for 10 months of the year when I used to be on them year-round!
Why didn't anyone tell me about this before? Perhaps the dozen or so physicians I've seen in the last three decades for this condition had stock in the pharmaceutical companies.(Just kidding.)More likely they didn't know about it.
I take one on vacation, have an extra in case I break my regular one, sent one to my mother and to my best friend, and have recommended them to everyone I know who has sinus problems.
Note: Be careful not to make the water much warmer than room-temperature. Add just enough salt to make it into a tear-like saline solution. Too little or too much salt, and too cold or hot water will hurt.
This heavy-duty ceramic model is great. It's glaze is nice and smooth, you can throw it in the dishwasher and be confident it's actually getting really clean, and I've dropped it on my hard ceramic floor and no chips or cracks.
Because it's truly inert, unlike the stainless steel types, you don't deal with any nasty after taste. The only part I wish were different is the size, the stainless one was about one pint, this is half that. Still, it works very well, is comfortable and easy to use.
Wow, I can breathe again! This will become a daily ritual like brushing my teeth. Great product! By the way, another company, Naso...(something) makes a plastic, unbreakable, pot which is great for travel.
I find it best to use the Neti pot in the shower standing up, just as part of my daily return with warm water. I do suffer from occasional allergies, and this helps a lot. I started using the Neti before the winter and I have gone the entire winter without catching a single cold. I don't use any special salt, just non-iodized salt from the grocery store for .75 cents. Last forever. No need to spend extra money on fancy salts.
It does take some trial and error to get the correct positioning and if the water temp or amount of salt is off, there is that burning sensation but it is not so bad. As another reviewer mentioned it is very helpful to warm up the pot first by filling and rinsing with hot water. And I'd skip the special salt packets and just get some kosher salt from the grocery store. I picked up a container for a buck that says it has 525 1/4 tsp servings, so even with daily use that would last almost a year and a half. I'd also recommend only using when you are going to be upright for at least an hour (not right before bed) to give any water which might remain a chance to drain rather than collecting in nasal passages/eustachian tubes.
Even non-drowsy formula sinus/allergy meds seem to affect me, so I'm very grateful to have discovered this natural (and CHEAP) form of relief!
With that said, this Neti Pot is amazing. My wife bought it and I was skeptical but tried it just to see what it felt like. I was expecting something akin to water boarding but it was nothing close. It did take a few attempts to get the salt to water ratio right for me. The recommended amount caused a little bit of a burning sensation like getting water up your nose while swimming in a pool. The results however have been spectacular!
Background:
I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. I use a dental appliance to help keep my airway open at night so I get a better night sleep and to reduce my snoring to a tolerable level for my wife. Without the dental appliance she is often forced to sleep in another room. My snoring is so loud it can be heard even when my bedroom door is closed. I have always had problems breathing through my nose with one of my nostrils usually blocked. I also take prescription sleep medication every night and frequently wake during the night but usually I am able to fall right back asleep.
Results:
On the first night of use my wife noticed that my snoring had completely stopped. (I also use a dental appliance). The second night had the same dramatic results. She had to feel around in the bed to make sure I was there. The third night I tried sleeping without the dental appliance but still used the Neti. I snored but not enough to disturb her, not continuously, and not enough to wake myself up throughout the night. I did not use my sleep medication on day two or three and I have slept the same amount of time or one hour longer each night. I do not notice waking during the night at all as I normally did pre-Neti.
Recommendation:
If you have problems sleeping due to breathing problems I would highly recommend giving this a try.
For those who have trouble getting the saline through the nasal passages in the morning due to congestion, try taking a hot shower first. This tends to open the passages somewhat and allows the saline to flow freely.
A Neti Pot just needs to hold an adequate amount of water, allow tilting the pot without spilling its contents, fit snugly in the user's nostrils, and regulate the water flow from the spout. This pot does all of those things. The food-quality ceramic construction feels sturdy.
I won't repeat the usage advice found in most other reviews, but will add that:
* Making your own solution is easy, just use a 1/4 tsp measuring spoon. No need to buy packets.
* Pouring water through your nose is necessarily somewhat messy. No neti pot will be 100% drip-proof.
* Pre-warming the pot with hot water is a good idea.
* Slightly too-salty water seems to draw off too much moisture from my sinuses, leaving my eyes feeling dry/tight as if dehydrated. I use a little less than the recommended 1/4tsp to avoid this effect.
There's no need to buy more expensive brands or "starter kits", this pot does everything you need. Recommended.
Most people give up too easily or don't know how to properly use the neti pot. Check out videos on youtube to see how to use one properly. You need to tilt your head to the side and use warm water with a pinch of salt. Also, when you first start your sinuses may be blocked up. Don't give up. Many times during the year, my sinuses are blocked. I use it every night no matter what. Even though it may not drain on one side, you will find that 10 minutes after using the neti pot, that your sinuses will clear up. Germs generally invade when your nasal passages become dried out. So doing this once a day, helps keep your sinuses moist so they can trap the germs. Lastly, germs actually take hours to penetrate our natural defenses. This is why flushing your sinuses once a day helps keep you healthy all year round.
Specific Product Review: After using my brother's ceramic Neti Pot, I wanted a ceramic one, too -- but all I could find at Walmart or CVS or Walgreens was cheap plastic junk -- and they weren't cheap, $15 or so! They were kind enough to include three cents worth of salt as though that's supposed to make the kit more valuable. I looked online to find a ceramic one, and selected the Ancient Secrets. It is excellent, meets every expectation, but the other ceramic models may be just as nice for all I know. I really didn't care for the little flowery pattern on one of them, but that's personal preference.
Supplier Review: Price was great, got the product in just a couple of days. The Neti Pot was ***NOT*** packaged well, it was basically just bouncing around loose inside a box. It was a miracle it hadn't broken -- but it hadn't, so I really have nothing to complain about.
- seals well around the nostril
- keeps the water in the pot rather than having it come out of the top hole
- flows smoothly through my sinuses
The Himalayan Institute design has problems in the above areas where this Ancient Secrets pot excels.
I would give this one a "5" if it weren't for the price. Something like this should be $5.99, shouldn't it? Then again, I have yet to see any Neti pot under $10, so perhaps I am being unfair.
Lastly, let me emphasize that there is no need to buy any special salts. Plain table salt works fine (get the NON-IODIZED variety) as does Kosher salt (it should be non-iodized but has a larger grain so you need to use about twice as much). Think about it... you are most likely going to be using tap water rather than heating up filtered water, so do you really need some overpriced "pure", "medical grade" salt? Save your money!!!
This is deeper than all of them which allows you not to spill out of the top and get greater gravity flow than the others. The original one that I have is just too shallow and does not hold near as much. After trying all of these I feel like a Neti Pot collector and Im not sure how I feel about that... but I can breathe :)
It works, it works, it works. There, I've said it. I can't impress on you how much better your sinus's will feel after a bout with this system. Not hard to master the technique - the first time or two will seem odd, but after that you figure how to hold you head so the angle is just right. Then it's just a warm, comfortable sensation in your nose. Quite pleasant, actually. As far as results, most of the villians in your nose are microscopic or at least, tiny; so, most times you won't see a science project in the sink after a treatment. But rest assured that it washes the pollen and other irritants out with the water drainage, then they won't cause you any problems later. I haven't used it while having a cold or an active sinus infection yet, but I anticipate it will help and soothe that problem.
Just try it. It really is beneficial because it works. I use sea salt, works fine, but I'm going to try the voodoo salt concoctions that these guys sell to see if it's any better.
