Editorial Reviews
Use alkalol as a nasal wash and mucus solvent to help clear blocker nasal passages and provide a drug-free relief from nasal congestion and irritation caused by sinusitis, allergies, head colds and post-nasal drip.

For several years large volume saline wash was my prescription for some limited amount of relief, mainly the NeilMed Sinus Rinse Regular Kit 1 kit. It helps, but my sinuses are so swollen at times that the water doesn't all want to come out even when leaning forward, and as it trickles out throughout the day or night I get earaches from it running over the Eustachian tubes. The exhaustion, complete tiredness, groggy foggy mind that comes from it? All of that. Hopefully that's enough to give you an idea of my level of suffering from sinus and allergy problems.
On a personal recommendation I decided to try this product. It took me 2 or 3 bottles to figure out how it best worked for me. At first, it definitely wasn't hurting but I couldn't tell how much it was helping. Many people dilute it, and I found for me I'm best off to use it full strength. Rather than a whole bottle of saline, or this mixed with saline, using just an ounce or so of this, just enough to rinse from each side to the other, has been enough to bring me a new level of relief and decongestion. I choose to use the bottle that came with my NeilMed kit rather than the rinser that comes with this kit. Being someone who has to watch the BP, I also have to stay way from the decongestants and this has been a great alternative. I find this especially helpful to use an hour or two before bed and using far less liquid means I have much less issue with drainage at night like with the saline in a higher volume.
Not to get too explicit, but this is the first product that not only decongests my nose but also causes me to need to spit after I've used it.
When I used it mixed with saline, I had mediocre results. It had a good smell but really didn't get at decongesting me. At full strength I get the results I'd hoped for, but I doubt someone could start using this product full strength. It takes some time to get used to the momentary burn you get after it drains out-- a little bit like smelling salts or having a soda bubble back up into your nose. And that being said, I don't have "rebound issues" like you can with prescription saline sprays that cause you to get really congested again right after it runs out.
The smell of the product is very much like a menthol, and while it doesn't smell like Vicks "vapo-rub" it can have a similar effect on the nose, and "punches you right in the face" for a second or two after using it. But it works. It's not so bad to make me tear up or anything like that.
On the downside, the bottles aren't that big. If you plan to completely replace your saline routine like I have (mostly), it can get to be a little expensive. As well, if you travel you'll have to check it since it's already liquid, whereas the saline packets travel well but require clean water at your destination. On the other hand, even a bottle a week is still in the general vicinity of a prescription nose spray.
So in summary: This product is now my product of choice. It took me 2-3 bottles to figure out how it was most effective for me, and other than cost, I have yet to discover any downsides. I can't call it a miracle like others, but it does help me stay functional and "non-funky" in the nose department. I waited more than a month before writing my review to give adequate opinion time.
My surgeon prescribed Alkalol for immediate use after sinus surgery. I've been using it ever since... some fifteen years... as needed. It provides immediate relief of sinus symptoms. And having used probably every allergy and cold product known to man, this one is my top choice. I have no worries about side effects or addiction. I can use it 2-3 times a day and then stop short without a rebound of the problem. I no longer call a doctor for antibiotics when I get a sinus infection. Just start using Alkalol for a couple of days. Clears it right up (and I don't get those nasty antibiotic side-effects!)
I'd never have heard of it if not for the surgeon and everyone I've recommended it to (which is everyone!) has never heard of it. This company and product should be a household word! It has the "better mousetrap." People need to hear about it! They definitely need to hype up their marketing - tho I hope they don't jack their prices up to do so.
My only gripe is that I have always had to special order Alkalol at local pharmacy counters and had to wait a couple of days for it to arrive. So I ordered two bottles at a time which usually lasts my husband and I about a year. But seeing the price here on Amazon!? Hey, I pay $2-4 a bottle depending on the pharmacy and how much profit they decide to tack on. I may use Amazon to send Alkalol to suffering out of town friends but think I'll stick with local pharmacies for now - better prices and no s/h costs.
I usually just buy the bottle by itself tho... It's really all you need and half the price.
UPDATE: This product has completely healed my sinus's. I use it in the morning and night, and have no more infections or congestion. Make no mistake about it either, I had some of the worst sinus problems that existed.
I have severe sinusitis and using my neti pot and Alkalol every day has helped me to manage my symptoms a little better.
It works. I put a spoonfull in every wash, cleans it right out. I have stopped using as much, find that a little goes a long way.
IF you suffer, GET THIS, you know who you are.
As others have suggested, start off diluted. The feeling is going to be anywhere from a tingle to pure fire. I have experienced some pretty sharp pain when using while having a sinus infection. Not the kind of pain that will be unusual for people like me with chronic sinus issues. However, after some fiddling around, I have my personal set up like this:
When I have no sinus infection:
1 x week at full strength, just after a good hot shower or bath
When I have a sinus infection:
Every day starting at half strength, working up to full strength in about 3-5 days when the infection has waned
Since I have been using this product, I have had only two sinus infections in the past year, as opposed to an average of 6. Also, the duration and severity seems to have been reduced in the two that I had.
Get the subscription, great deal.
***Update**** 11-25-2011- My sinuses are better than ever. I have changed up my routine, and now I add a cap or two to my neil-med sinus high volume low pressure saline bottle. I do this once a day (or twice), unless I forget or am in a hurry. If I feel pressure, I increase to 3-4 capfulls added to the volume rinse. Combining this with cetirizine at night and loratidine day time with a shot of flonase and I think I am better off than I have been in years.
but once you get it down, no problem. I use a tad more of the weakest strength. Minty nasal afterwards.
breath clear, but it's hard to wash when one nostril is clogged.
I don't get allergies, but cleaning always sounds good right ?
I use the Subscription program and the price is 33% less than the local drugstore, and it's delivered for free by Amazon. This is a great deal!
Alkalol destroyed my post nasal drip and I can finally sleep at night without coughing every 5 seconds. I recommend this to anyone that suffers from post nasal drip or post nasal drip cough.
My NetiPot and saline solution alone did not do the trick, but mixing in %40 Alkalol cleared everything up and they stayed clear all night.
This stuff is amazing.
I felt a sinus infection or head cold coming on a couple of weeks ago and, based on a personal recommendation, I tried Alkalol. I added Alkalol to my normal 8oz NeilMed Sinus Rinse. It worked REALLY well in breaking up the congestion and draining sinuses quickly. The menthol or something else in Alkalol helped keep my sinuses open MUCH longer than my NeilMed sinus wash without the Alkalol.
I started out with 1 or 2 tablespoons (1/2 to 1oz) Alkalol along with a NeilMed saline packet in my 8oz sinus wash. A little goes a long way, and it is effective in small doses. According to Alkalol's website you can go all the way to 100% concentration, but in my opinion that would be VERY strong.
I also use a CPAP machine at night, so clear sinuses are critical for my breathing therapy. I am now using this every evening to clear my sinuses before I go to sleep and to keep them clear throughout the night.
Here are some specific usage recommendations in case anyone needs or want them:
There is a cup that comes with the product, I've never used that. I use a neti-pot or 8oz NeilMed Sinus Rinse squeeze bottle.
For first time use, I'd recommend 1 tablespoon (0.5oz) Alkalol in 8oz, 1:16 solution (or equivalent strength solution), just to make sure it isn't too strong your first time. The bottle says you can go up to 100% strength, but Alkalol is fairly strong and some people may need to work their way up to a stronger solution.
Personally I use the 2 tablespoons (1oz) Alkalol in 8oz, 1:8 solution on a daily maintenance level to keep my sinuses clear before bed. I normally take it 1-2 hours before bedtime, so my sinuses have time to fully drain before going to sleep.
IF YOU HAVE BAD CONGESTION and YOU can tolerate the stronger Alkalol solution, I'd go 1:4 (25%) solution or stronger if you can take it without discomfort. This should break up bad congestion. It says on the Alkalol bottle you can go 100% (full strength), but that is too strong for me. My friend who uses it could go full strength, but I don't think most people would like it that strong.
Make sure you warm the nasal solution to body temperature for comfort and to help soften the mucus.
Also, I try to put the Alkalol solution through my sinuses as SLOWLY as I can. I do this because Alkalol loosens and dissolves the mucus and congestion ON CONTACT, so I think it works well to put it through as slowly as you can so it can stay in contact with the yuck in your sinuses longer and has more time to loosen and dissolve it.
When spring came along and my allergies worsened, I tried Alkalol again to help clear my head, and again it helped.
I love the product. It can be hard to find in the stores, so I was relieved to find it available on Amazon.
I would recommend using it with a saline rinse to anyone. I have used Neilmed saline rinse every day for 3-4 years, and it has changed my life. Now, I add one capful of Alkalol to the water in addition to the salt, and it's so much better. If you have never used a saline rinse, but you suffer from sinus problems, I urge you to give it a try. I was nervous at first, I was sure it would hurt and I'd throw up. But I was wrong. As long as you use saline (instead of plain water), there's never any pain. It's nothing but soothing.
Good luck!
I just recently got the Nasal Irrigation bug about a year ago when I had a nasty sinus infection. My doctor recommended using a salt water nasal rinse to clear the infection. Either that or take up surfing. Apparently wiping out on a big wave tends to shoot salty ocean water up your nose too! (yes, my doctor in Hawaii really prescribed surfing to me -- bet you don't hear that kind of prescription very often) Since I don't surf (for fear of drowning), I started doing the saline rinse instead. Turned out to work well and I was happy to do the saline rinse for a year. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than that, I discovered Alkalol from Amazon's Related Items list. I read the reviews and decided to take a chance on it.
The result?
Alkalol really works! I think I'm getting addicted to this stuff. The normal saline solution works pretty good in it's own right but when you add some of this stuff, watch out... you will be in for a real THOROUGH cleansing. Alkalol gets in your nose, loosens up and clears out the mucus and leaves your nose minty fresh! As a matter of fact, my nose no longer feels clean if it doesn't smell minty!
My advice to the Alkalol Company? Stop teasing us with this puny 16oz bottle and bring on the half-gallon! I'm just kidding... where the heck would you store that?

Of course, you can buy it from stores like Walmart, where it is cheaper.
