It's Helping Me, And That's The Long & Short Of It. - THATCH "RST" on Apr 18, 2011

I'm a long term allergy sufferer and chronic sinus infections are the norm for me. I've had allergies since teenage years, have done every bit of everything possible including allergy shots, ENT doctors, MRI's, homeopathic, prescription, nose sprays and saline sprays. I've tried every combination, dosage and antibiotic. Many times.

For several years large volume saline wash was my prescription for some limited amount of relief, mainly the NeilMed Sinus Rinse Regular Kit 1 kit. It helps, but my sinuses are so swollen at times that the water doesn't all want to come out even when leaning forward, and as it trickles out throughout the day or night I get earaches from it running over the Eustachian tubes. The exhaustion, complete tiredness, groggy foggy mind that comes from it? All of that. Hopefully that's enough to give you an idea of my level of suffering from sinus and allergy problems.

On a personal recommendation I decided to try this product. It took me 2 or 3 bottles to figure out how it best worked for me. At first, it definitely wasn't hurting but I couldn't tell how much it was helping. Many people dilute it, and I found for me I'm best off to use it full strength. Rather than a whole bottle of saline, or this mixed with saline, using just an ounce or so of this, just enough to rinse from each side to the other, has been enough to bring me a new level of relief and decongestion. I choose to use the bottle that came with my NeilMed kit rather than the rinser that comes with this kit. Being someone who has to watch the BP, I also have to stay way from the decongestants and this has been a great alternative. I find this especially helpful to use an hour or two before bed and using far less liquid means I have much less issue with drainage at night like with the saline in a higher volume.

Not to get too explicit, but this is the first product that not only decongests my nose but also causes me to need to spit after I've used it.

When I used it mixed with saline, I had mediocre results. It had a good smell but really didn't get at decongesting me. At full strength I get the results I'd hoped for, but I doubt someone could start using this product full strength. It takes some time to get used to the momentary burn you get after it drains out-- a little bit like smelling salts or having a soda bubble back up into your nose. And that being said, I don't have "rebound issues" like you can with prescription saline sprays that cause you to get really congested again right after it runs out.

The smell of the product is very much like a menthol, and while it doesn't smell like Vicks "vapo-rub" it can have a similar effect on the nose, and "punches you right in the face" for a second or two after using it. But it works. It's not so bad to make me tear up or anything like that.

On the downside, the bottles aren't that big. If you plan to completely replace your saline routine like I have (mostly), it can get to be a little expensive. As well, if you travel you'll have to check it since it's already liquid, whereas the saline packets travel well but require clean water at your destination. On the other hand, even a bottle a week is still in the general vicinity of a prescription nose spray.

So in summary: This product is now my product of choice. It took me 2-3 bottles to figure out how it was most effective for me, and other than cost, I have yet to discover any downsides. I can't call it a miracle like others, but it does help me stay functional and "non-funky" in the nose department. I waited more than a month before writing my review to give adequate opinion time.

The Answer To Colds, Sinus Probs & Allergies - The Illustrated Home on Dec 13, 2010

This product could put every other cold, flu, allergy product out of business!

My surgeon prescribed Alkalol for immediate use after sinus surgery. I've been using it ever since... some fifteen years... as needed. It provides immediate relief of sinus symptoms. And having used probably every allergy and cold product known to man, this one is my top choice. I have no worries about side effects or addiction. I can use it 2-3 times a day and then stop short without a rebound of the problem. I no longer call a doctor for antibiotics when I get a sinus infection. Just start using Alkalol for a couple of days. Clears it right up (and I don't get those nasty antibiotic side-effects!)

I'd never have heard of it if not for the surgeon and everyone I've recommended it to (which is everyone!) has never heard of it. This company and product should be a household word! It has the "better mousetrap." People need to hear about it! They definitely need to hype up their marketing - tho I hope they don't jack their prices up to do so.

My only gripe is that I have always had to special order Alkalol at local pharmacy counters and had to wait a couple of days for it to arrive. So I ordered two bottles at a time which usually lasts my husband and I about a year. But seeing the price here on Amazon!? Hey, I pay $2-4 a bottle depending on the pharmacy and how much profit they decide to tack on. I may use Amazon to send Alkalol to suffering out of town friends but think I'll stick with local pharmacies for now - better prices and no s/h costs.

I usually just buy the bottle by itself tho... It's really all you need and half the price.

As Good As Afrin... Without The Addiction - just somebody ordina on May 5, 2011

I bought 3 bottles of this stuff a year or so ago, and found it too strong to use. It sat in my closet until I recently started using it after my antibiotics became less effective. I mix this at about a 40%alkalol/60%warm water solution. It opens up my nasal passages as good as afrin, and has no rebound effect. I will probably be using this product for quite some time. I am one that has the absolute worst allergy and sinus problems. Antibiotics have worked great in the best but are not sustainable......

UPDATE: This product has completely healed my sinus's. I use it in the morning and night, and have no more infections or congestion. Make no mistake about it either, I had some of the worst sinus problems that existed.

I'm An Alkalol-ic - Megan on Feb 18, 2011

I love this product! I started adding Alkalol to my neti pot after learning about it from my allergist. Now I'm hooked! There's no going back to regular saline - my neti pot just isn't the same without a little Alkalol added. It feels very refreshing and it does a better job of breaking up the congestion than just regular saline. It did take some getting used to though - the first time I tried Alkalol, I could barely stand the strong smell. I recommend starting out with a small amount and working your way up as you become comfortable with it. Also, I've never been able to use it in the concentration recommended on the bottle (one-half to full strength), but I find it still works for me at a lower concentration. If it creates an uncomfortable burning sensation, then you should try reducing the amount of Alkalol and increasing the amount of saline. I haven't quite gotten the hang of using the nasal cup that comes with it, so I prefer adding it to my neti. I normally add about 2 teaspoons per cup of saline.

I have severe sinusitis and using my neti pot and Alkalol every day has helped me to manage my symptoms a little better.

It It Is Very Strong But Good! - DNCB "First Class Pr on Mar 14, 2011

It really does its job of clearing my nostrils and making me feel like a new person. I get these horrible stuffed sinuses and it helps to have something strong (be careful with measurements) that helps with that.

Must Have For Those That Use The Nasal Wash - Matthew M. Mayhan on Sep 24, 2011

Been suffering for two years. Finding this product, was like the first time i did Neilmed nasal wash.

It works. I put a spoonfull in every wash, cleans it right out. I have stopped using as much, find that a little goes a long way.

IF you suffer, GET THIS, you know who you are.

Your Frustration May End Here - Wokman on Aug 10, 2011

I have tried a lot of things, neti pots, neil med high volume, anfrin, saline rinses, suppressant meds, flonase, head position while lying in bed, etc. They all have pros and cons. So far, alkalol seems to be a major positive step.

As others have suggested, start off diluted. The feeling is going to be anywhere from a tingle to pure fire. I have experienced some pretty sharp pain when using while having a sinus infection. Not the kind of pain that will be unusual for people like me with chronic sinus issues. However, after some fiddling around, I have my personal set up like this:

When I have no sinus infection:

1 x week at full strength, just after a good hot shower or bath

When I have a sinus infection:

Every day starting at half strength, working up to full strength in about 3-5 days when the infection has waned

Since I have been using this product, I have had only two sinus infections in the past year, as opposed to an average of 6. Also, the duration and severity seems to have been reduced in the two that I had.

Get the subscription, great deal.

***Update**** 11-25-2011- My sinuses are better than ever. I have changed up my routine, and now I add a cap or two to my neil-med sinus high volume low pressure saline bottle. I do this once a day (or twice), unless I forget or am in a hurry. If I feel pressure, I increase to 3-4 capfulls added to the volume rinse. Combining this with cetirizine at night and loratidine day time with a shot of flonase and I think I am better off than I have been in years.

Awesome - Antoinette Flicker " on Feb 23, 2011

My ENT recommended this to me for ongoing sinus pain before signing up for surgery. This product is great. I recommend starting out with minimal dose then work your way up. I now add 4 teaspoons to my Neti Pot. Definately recommend it!

Minty... - M. Kwan on Jan 14, 2011

Feels real awkward first couple times using it...holding the head slightly forward, and tilting to each side.

but once you get it down, no problem. I use a tad more of the weakest strength. Minty nasal afterwards.

breath clear, but it's hard to wash when one nostril is clogged.

I don't get allergies, but cleaning always sounds good right ?

Works Incredibly!!! - Sunny11 on Nov 29, 2011

I just came home been suffering with headaches, dark circles, head pressure, post-nasal drip, been on antibiotics 3x in the last several months. Tried this not to be gross but, thick green drainage came out immediately. I was able to breath better had less head pressure. So, impressed on how well it work. Only stung a tiny bit, but nothing compared to the pain from a sinus infection. Do yourself a favor and buy this immediately. This stuff works!!!

Best Nasal Wash Ever! - Joe-fix-it on Jun 16, 2011

I have been mixing my own saline solution for 7 years, since my surgery to repair a deviated septum. Although the salt, baking soda, and water mix helps, Alkalol is definitely superior. It really does dissolve excess mucus, which the saline by itself does not do. I have been using Alkalol for 6 months or so, and I have no intention of going back to plain old saline. I would recommend Alkalol to anyone who has sinus or nasal congestion issues, and I would recommend buying it through Amazon. With the periodic ordering plan, you can have the exact amount delivered at exactly the time you want it, you get it at a discounted price, and the shipping is free. I mix it 50-50 with distilled water, because I think it is strong enough to do the job at that strength. It's also easier to mix it that way than trying to make a 40% or 60% solution. I just pour half of a new bottle into an old one and top them off with the water. I use a bulb syringe, so I'm really not sure how the Alkalol-supplied cup works. This product is very difficult to find in stores, which makes no sense at all. I would have been using it for years if I would have heard about it sooner. If you have congestion, try it, and you'll be amazed at the difference.

Great For Chronic Sinus Problems - Sinusitus Sufferer on Jun 6, 2011

If you suffer from chronic sinusitus and use salt water nasal washes to help control the mucus, Alkalol boosts the effectiveness and soothes the tissues. I've been much more comfortable since I started using it.
I use the Subscription program and the price is 33% less than the local drugstore, and it's delivered for free by Amazon. This is a great deal!

Kills Post Nasal Drip - Ryan D Staats on Jan 12, 2012

I usually suffer from post nasal drip for months after getting a cold, it is accompanied by a horrible cough.

Alkalol destroyed my post nasal drip and I can finally sleep at night without coughing every 5 seconds. I recommend this to anyone that suffers from post nasal drip or post nasal drip cough.

My NetiPot and saline solution alone did not do the trick, but mixing in %40 Alkalol cleared everything up and they stayed clear all night.

This stuff is amazing.

Extremely Effective At Clearing Nasal Congestion - dvd fanatic on Dec 20, 2011

I use the 8oz NeilMed Sinus Rinse squeeze bottle twice per day. This normally keeps my sinuses clear.

I felt a sinus infection or head cold coming on a couple of weeks ago and, based on a personal recommendation, I tried Alkalol. I added Alkalol to my normal 8oz NeilMed Sinus Rinse. It worked REALLY well in breaking up the congestion and draining sinuses quickly. The menthol or something else in Alkalol helped keep my sinuses open MUCH longer than my NeilMed sinus wash without the Alkalol.

I started out with 1 or 2 tablespoons (1/2 to 1oz) Alkalol along with a NeilMed saline packet in my 8oz sinus wash. A little goes a long way, and it is effective in small doses. According to Alkalol's website you can go all the way to 100% concentration, but in my opinion that would be VERY strong.

I also use a CPAP machine at night, so clear sinuses are critical for my breathing therapy. I am now using this every evening to clear my sinuses before I go to sleep and to keep them clear throughout the night.

Here are some specific usage recommendations in case anyone needs or want them:
There is a cup that comes with the product, I've never used that. I use a neti-pot or 8oz NeilMed Sinus Rinse squeeze bottle.

For first time use, I'd recommend 1 tablespoon (0.5oz) Alkalol in 8oz, 1:16 solution (or equivalent strength solution), just to make sure it isn't too strong your first time. The bottle says you can go up to 100% strength, but Alkalol is fairly strong and some people may need to work their way up to a stronger solution.

Personally I use the 2 tablespoons (1oz) Alkalol in 8oz, 1:8 solution on a daily maintenance level to keep my sinuses clear before bed. I normally take it 1-2 hours before bedtime, so my sinuses have time to fully drain before going to sleep.

IF YOU HAVE BAD CONGESTION and YOU can tolerate the stronger Alkalol solution, I'd go 1:4 (25%) solution or stronger if you can take it without discomfort. This should break up bad congestion. It says on the Alkalol bottle you can go 100% (full strength), but that is too strong for me. My friend who uses it could go full strength, but I don't think most people would like it that strong.

Make sure you warm the nasal solution to body temperature for comfort and to help soften the mucus.

Also, I try to put the Alkalol solution through my sinuses as SLOWLY as I can. I do this because Alkalol loosens and dissolves the mucus and congestion ON CONTACT, so I think it works well to put it through as slowly as you can so it can stay in contact with the yuck in your sinuses longer and has more time to loosen and dissolve it.

Best Solution For Me - Thomas on Oct 27, 2011

Alkakol has become part of my daily routine. I suffer from allergies year round and taking allergy medicine daily isn't what I wanted. I use a squeeze bottle and rinse my sinuses with warm water and Alkalol. This keeps my sinuses clear for about 12 hours and completely eliminated my need for allergy medicine. This is also great for minimizing the effects of colds and sinus infections. Used daily, I have noticed that I rarely get colds and sinus infections like I used to. Ordering through Amazon was easier than finding it in local pharmacies and about 25% less expensive.

Helps Soothe & Clear - Felicia M Pullam on Sep 28, 2011

I've had long term allergy problems - suffering from severe sinus pain for ten years. Just moved to a new place, and the winter dryness was adding insult to injury with sharper pain than I've ever had. I first used Alkalol to soothe that pain, and it worked far better than I hoped. It eliminated the pain.

When spring came along and my allergies worsened, I tried Alkalol again to help clear my head, and again it helped.

I love the product. It can be hard to find in the stores, so I was relieved to find it available on Amazon.

I would recommend using it with a saline rinse to anyone. I have used Neilmed saline rinse every day for 3-4 years, and it has changed my life. Now, I add one capful of Alkalol to the water in addition to the salt, and it's so much better. If you have never used a saline rinse, but you suffer from sinus problems, I urge you to give it a try. I was nervous at first, I was sure it would hurt and I'd throw up. But I was wrong. As long as you use saline (instead of plain water), there's never any pain. It's nothing but soothing.

Good luck!

Wow! Alkalol Hits The Spot! - Dave's two-cents on on May 28, 2011

Funny that I've never heard of this product until recently despite the fact that it's been around since 1896! Many thanks to Amazon and especially to Amazon reviewers who are kind enough to share their thoughts and experiences with other shoppers like me. Otherwise I never would have discovered what is perhaps one of the greatest products still in existence! 1896?!! Where have you been all my life?

I just recently got the Nasal Irrigation bug about a year ago when I had a nasty sinus infection. My doctor recommended using a salt water nasal rinse to clear the infection. Either that or take up surfing. Apparently wiping out on a big wave tends to shoot salty ocean water up your nose too! (yes, my doctor in Hawaii really prescribed surfing to me -- bet you don't hear that kind of prescription very often) Since I don't surf (for fear of drowning), I started doing the saline rinse instead. Turned out to work well and I was happy to do the saline rinse for a year. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better than that, I discovered Alkalol from Amazon's Related Items list. I read the reviews and decided to take a chance on it.

The result?

Alkalol really works! I think I'm getting addicted to this stuff. The normal saline solution works pretty good in it's own right but when you add some of this stuff, watch out... you will be in for a real THOROUGH cleansing. Alkalol gets in your nose, loosens up and clears out the mucus and leaves your nose minty fresh! As a matter of fact, my nose no longer feels clean if it doesn't smell minty!

My advice to the Alkalol Company? Stop teasing us with this puny 16oz bottle and bring on the half-gallon! I'm just kidding... where the heck would you store that?

Singers Best Friend - guambear on Oct 4, 2010

As a singer, I've used Alkalol for many years. It is an amazing nasal treatment. My sister first learned of the product for the late opera singer Eileen Farrel many year ago.

Alkalol - Dr. Kristi on Dec 4, 2011

This is a deeply invigorating and cleaning solution to help clear the sinuses and nasal airways of extra mucous. It is an excellent compliment to Breathe Ease XL in a sinus irrigation program.

Works For Chronic Sinusitis - T. Lewison on May 20, 2011

I have the chronic sinusitis and ended have surgery about 4 years ago. My doctor recommended the sinus rinse and I've been doing that since. Its been very helpful alleviating the symptoms and so far I've been able to stay away from the doctor. I recently stumbled across this Alkalol and I do like adding it to my repertoire. I don't know how anyone is able to do the full strength or even half and half rinse. I tend to use about 10-20 percent alkaolo to do the rinse and that is often stinging enough. But whatever works.

Exellent Service-love The Product - J. Bowman on Feb 25, 2011

Vender charged resonable freight and received in a great time. This was the best value compared with other venders. Love the product. Works great in a Netti pot

Significantly Better Than Other Nasal Rinses - AmusingistheDawn on Dec 27, 2011

It has a long lasting effect and will continually clear the sinuses, so be prepared to blow your nose an hour later and have a lot of stuff come out. While any rinse is really good, this one is really refreshing, but it works as a solvent and clears out the sinuses much better than a rinse alone.

I'm Addicted To Alkalol! - K.Dub on Dec 21, 2011

I bought a bottle of Alkalol after reading some of the reviews on here. For me, it was a last ditch effort. When I had my wisdom teeth remove a small hole was torn into my sinus cavity which caused a sinus infection. I lived with this sinus infection for about 4 months before my doctor sent me to a specialist who recommended surgery. I, not liking the idea of a rotor rooter procedure being done to my nose declined the surgery at that time. I then did some research on homeopathic treatments and ran across the suggestion of Alkalol. I researched it and decided for the price it would be worth a shot. I added just one teaspoon to my neti pot for 2 days. It was amazing. By the time I got this in the mail I had been in discomfort for about 6 months (the shipping wasn't that slow, I am just a procrastinator). First, I got more gunk out than with the saline additive neti pot comes with(it was gross). Second, after the second rinse all my problems were gone, all of them! I've not had any symptoms since October (it's now December). My ENT told me that with a dental injury to the sinus cavity a lot of times there's a 2nd infection a few months later. So far, I've seen no signs of a recurring infection. This is like minty holy water to me.

Heps To Open Up The Sinuses - Eric Hanson on Dec 4, 2011

This product works as described. At first I thought it would be too strong, but I was happily surprised. I will buy it again.

Love It! - Sybil Dorsett "qvcnu on Nov 14, 2011

You'll probably throw away the nettie pot when you try this! It works great, and it feels refreshing. Just be careful not to use too much alkalol, as it will sting. I'm the type that loves pushing my tongue against a canka sore, so I LOVE THE STING! :)

Nose And Throat Relief - Marcus D. Mendiola on Oct 26, 2011

Help me with nose and throat pain, stuffiness and allergies, its strong but the alternative is worse, try it, don't suffer from sinus infection for to long. Use a netti pot, not the wasteful plastic they include.

Efffectiv To Rinse Out The Mucus And Allergen - Dou on Jun 26, 2011

I have used it for 5 months, which is effective in rinsing out the mucus from my nose. After using it my feeling is much better . It is useful for those with sinusitis.
Of course, you can buy it from stores like Walmart, where it is cheaper.

Helps! - Robert L. Renteria on Jan 24, 2012

I started using this with NeilMed Sinus Rinse after throat and sinus surgery.
I was able to remove alot more goo with this.

Unbelievable! - M. Pearson "Coffee@h on Jan 15, 2012

I used this recipe I received from an elderly couple and I could not believe the results. I'm sure just going by the directions will do the job also. I cannot believe how different I feel and how much better I could breathe after using this. I plan on using it everyday and hopefully I can stop using Sudafed which makes my heart flutter. The box says just to use alkalol and water so if you would rather do that I'm sure it would be just as good. I just thought I would tell others about this remedy. The Alkalol Nasal Wash Cup makes it so easy to use the Alkalol. Nothing to it! You should go to [...] and read the FAQ's, very interesting.

My husband and I use this regularly and love it! It provides such a refreshing feeling in the sinuses. We mix 3 teaspoons with 4 oz salt water solution (use distilled...not tap!), then finish the wash with the remaining 4 oz salt water solution.

Transaction is always smooth as silk! Definitely recommend this product & seller!

Does What It Says....sometimes - Thpd197 on Feb 22, 2011

I purchased this product needing some relief from seasonal allergy congestion. I used this product which irritated my nasal passages causing them to swell and thus making it impossible to breathe through my nose or use this product effectively. I used a nasal spray to open my nasal passages and then tried this product again. The nasal lavage device that is included with the nasal wash WILL scratch the inside of your nose if you aren't careful. If I use this product again it will be with a neti pot. This product does contain camphor which does not taste or smell good. I can completely understand how this product would work for someone with a runny nose without swollen nasal pasages. This product also contains alum which seemed to reduce swelling but only on a minimal level. When I finished using this product I was suprised at how much it smelled and tasted like the old fashioned Listerine mouthwash.

It Really Burns! - Erika S on Dec 23, 2011

I had high hopes for this product, but I can only seem to use about a tenth of it in distilled water- if I don't then the pain is terrible. If I could return it I certainly would.

Contains Aluminum - Adam Helberg on Dec 1, 2010

A teaspoon(5 mL) of Alkalol added to 8oz Sinus Rinse does help with the decongestant effect. My reservation is that it does contain aluminum. Perhaps it's not much and the link between aluminum and Alzheimer's is controversial I know. Still I prefer to avoid products with aluminum.

Not Helpful - Pamela A. Rodriguez on Feb 2, 2011

I've used this product for a week and all I get out of it is a horrible burning sensation. I still have congestion and a bad smell after. If you have severe sinusitis this product is a waste of time. It's probably better for someone who suffers from occasional congestion.
