Editorial Reviews
The ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis is one of the most popular ankle supports with coaches, trainers and physical therapists. The contoured tongue provides exceptional fit and is constructed of light-weight yet durable Cool Flex material. This material also lines the inside back of the boot, providing increased comfort to the achilles area. The polyester-cotton laces are strong and resist shrinking. 20 or the 25 universities in the AP top 25 wear the ASO or EVO ankle brace. 55 of the 65 schools in mens NCAA tournament 2009 wore the ASO ankle orthosis. ASO is the choice of champions.

Great Ankle Brace - drew on Oct 21, 2010

I have probably bought 6 different ankle braces in a never-ending quest to find the perfect one. My wife makes fun of me about this every time I bring a new one home. I used an uncomfortable ankle brace with stiff plastic rods in it for a long time, before I finally bought the McDavid based on a recommendation from a basketball buddy. Then I decided to buy this one for comparison. They have exactly the same design with a few minor differences, and both work extremely well to stabilize the ankle without being uncomfortable. The McDavid is a bit more bulky, and has something like 9 sets of eyelets to lace up, which takes a while to tighten/loosen. It also felt a bit tight in the forefoot initially, although that has improved with breaking in, to the point where it no longer bothers me. The ASO has a smaller profile and only has 6 sets of eyelets to tighten/loosen, which makes it easier to use. I like them both, and now use one on each ankle. I prefer the ASO for ease of use, but the difference between the two is minor.

As Advertised - EdwardusPrimus on Sep 5, 2008

- not as flexible as an ace for range of motion, but gives more support and is more adjustable than your shoes - has laces and velcro straps.
- for initial treatment of a sprain I found the air cast gave more relief from pain and adequate support, however once I was up and walking around I wanted the aso to make sure I didn't turn my foot the wrong way again.

Awesome!! - rohit_13 on Jun 13, 2011

I have extremely weak ankles.. I roll them almost every week when I play basketball. I got these braces last week and they are AWESOME! They give amazing support to my ankles and I don't feel restricted in them. There is no way I can roll my ankles in these!!

ASO Ankle Orthosis Is As Described: Stabilizing - dd121 on Apr 14, 2011

The ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis - Black - Smallworks as described. I bought this item for my daughter a few days after she severely sprained her ankle in tumbling. Since this item cannot be returned, we followed the instructions and carefully measured her ankle according to the instructions on the site. We determined she needed the small brace. It fit perfectly. She has had other ankle braces that she has not liked for various reasons. She says this one is comfortable and definitely provides her with a secure feeling that her ankle is stable. She has worn it doing tumbling (several back tucks, aerial cartwheels, etc.), playing soccer (goalkeeper on a premiere team, lots of jumping, cutting, kicking, etc.) and playing Ultimate Frisbee (lots of running, cutting, jumping). Except for occasional pain from sudden impact compression (landing hard on the ball and toes of her feet in tumbling or punting with the laces), she says she feels no pain and does not fear her ankle turning or giving out at all. She is completely happy with this brace and is glad we discovered it! I'm now adding to this review since my daughter has had a chance to use this brace extensively over a few weeks. Even though the original ankle she sprained has mostly healed, she plans to continue wearing the brace due to very loose ligaments. Unfortunately, this has now led to a severe sprain in her other ankle. She does not want to discontinue all of her sports so she has requested another brace and plans to wear both at all times while playing sports. I am adding yet another addendum to the above review. My daughter has been using both braces now for all of her activities. She LOVES these braces and plans to always wear them when doing sports as a preventive measure now.

I Am Playing Soccer Again! - Ignacio on Apr 11, 2011

Last August I had a severe high ankle sprain playing soccer and had not touched a ball since then (9 months later)
I decided to try after a lot of hours at the gym, ankle exercises,.... First game my ankle felt awkward while playing (looked like I had never played soccer before) and was very sore after just playing 15 min each half.
A friend recommended this and bought it straight away.
I have now played 2 full games with it and it feels great while playing and almost not sore at all the day after.
Fits very comfortable inside of my cleats and I can barely feel is there.
couldn't be happier!

Great Product, Not Exactly What I Was Looking For. - KrookieMonster on Aug 8, 2011

Great quality item, just not as flexible as I thought it could be. Then again, you can loosen/tighten it anyway you please. Maybe I need to break it in a little bit. I just like full range of movement without it being uncomfortable (being a skateboarder). But other than then that, out of all the ankle braces I've had for years this one is of GREAT quality. Recommended.

Works Great! - Dr. Rick on Jul 4, 2011

This product works great. It's quick to put on, is comfortable, fits great in a shoe, and provides great stabilization.

Great Support - J. Camacho "GoJustin on Jul 2, 2011

My daughter had ankle reconstruction surgery. This is the exact ankle brace that the surgeon recommended after removing the leg brace. She wears it to exercise, and whenever she needs extra ankle support. She loves it. She feels her ankle is very stable, and is comfortable while wearing it. In fact she wore it to Disneyland, and was able to walk most of the day with no pain. The cost was significantly cheaper than purchasing it at the medical supply store. I did have to pay extra to have it sent sooner, since she needed it asap. It arrived within 2 days, as promised, which worked out perfectly. We give it a 5 star rating. No negative comments to report.

Great Ankle Support - M. Lynch on Mar 18, 2011

These ankle braces work great; easy to put on and great support. They saved my ankles while playing basketball!

Excellent For Ankle Sprain Recovery - K. Frerichs on Mar 13, 2011

This is the third type of brace have bought in the 5 weeks following a moderate ankle sprain. I had tried a simple compression brace and a neoprene brace with straps. Neither provided enough support and both would cut off circulation to the heel. The ASO brace provides plenty of support and has never cut off circulation to any part of my foot. It does limit range of motion a bit (to be expected) but I run in it regularly with no noticeable impact. I use it with and without socks and have never received any annoying rubs, pokes, or blisters.

Great For Multiple Ankle Sprains. - christopher on Feb 1, 2011

I play basketball weekly and had too many ankle sprains to remember; so both of my ankles are a bit "weak" and I don't want to sprain it again. I have spent hundreds of dollars on numerous different ankle braces. I have to say I love this the best. It is not too rigid where it hurts my feet after squeezing into a basketball shoe. The S-curve is perfect for stabilizing and I don't feel too restricted.

The most important thing is the comfort. When I put it on and put on my shoes; I feel comfortable. I barely notice the brace there. Well worth the price. If you want a ankle brace to wear regularly for sports; I would recommend getting this first and not waste money on others. I wish I knew about this and bought it way before all the others. I could have say around 2 hundred dollars.

Soccer Player With Bad Ankles... - M. Thomas on Nov 16, 2010

I have been playing soccer for over 20 years with a long stint playing basketball. During my basketball career once or twice a year I would roll one of my ankles really bad coming down from a jump. I quit basketball long ago, but it caused me to be plagued with bad ankles ever since and they started coming back playing indoor soccer in the last couple years. I have been taping them each game, but with two games a week this becomes a long tedious process and I can't tell you how much I have spent buying sport tape.

So I decided to check if there were any really good ankle wraps. I needed something light, easy to put on, and very supportive. I read the reviews and decided to buy both the ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis (size large--I wear size 11 shoes) and the McDavid Lightweight Ankle Brace because both reviewed very favorably. After 4 games wearing both, I have to pick the ASO as the clear winner for me. There are a few less lace loops to cinch in the ASO, which makes it easier to put on. The tongue of the ASO is a lil stretchy with helps for a comfortable fit. And with the extra straps around the outside the whole thing just feels tighter and more protective.

I do have to note that both are very protective as I have not rolled my ankles in either. I just felt the ASO gives a lil more protection and support with a much more comfortable fit. My shin guards fit a lil better over the McDavid's though, but I found that just pushing the guard up an inch or so higher worked better. The McDavid's also started rubbing on the back of my ankle above my heel. To be fair this could be my fault for not tightening them again after I warmed up...which I definitely recommend.

So after the trials I decided to by a 2nd ASO and I await its delivery as we speak. So for all you soccer players with bad ankles, I highly recommend the ASO!

McDavid Vs ASO - Xiao Geng on Jun 19, 2011

I bought the McDavid Ankle with Strap (Sports) after twisting my ankle one week before Tough Mudder SOcal. During my event, this brace worked flawlessly, and comes highly recommended.

I do a lot of hiking on uneven terrain, and came close to twisting my other ankle. So I decided to buy the other highly reviewed ankle brace, the ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis.

The good points:
They both work on the same principle, and are both effective at their purpose. A tight fitting, but still flexible foot brace, with two cross straps, and one around the lower shin/upper ankle strap.

They both get a 5 star rating from me, there are minor differences between the two, with which I will list here:

The McDavid is tighter on the top of the foot, and is harder to remove. Tends to be slightly uncomfortable if overtightened. You have to untie multiple laces to be able to remove it. It feels more snug than the ASO. I would say this one offers slightly better support around the ankles, at cost of more discomfort. Good if you have more of a severe sprain.

The ASO gives you more mobility, still with great support on the ankle. Easier to remove.

I wear 9.5 shoes, so I have medium for both.

Overall, they are both good, but the McDavid feels slightly tighter on the foot. I still give both 5 stars, since they both perform as designed.

Absolutely Wonderful - C. Hatch "Tcoe's Mom on Dec 1, 2011

My husband is disabled and must wear one of these every day. This product is well made and wears really well. Would definitely buy this item again in the future. Worth every penney.

Great Brace - dmorgan on Oct 31, 2011

This is a great brace. My daughter has worn a pair of them for basketball for the past three seasons and we are now replacing the set with a new set as the old ones have finally worn out. I am happy to say that she has never had any ankle injury during basketball. When she did have a rolled ankle during soccer, the trainer (who knew she played basketball) recommended that she wear the ankle brace for the remainder of the soccer season. Other than one rolled ankle that happened while not wearing the brace, I've managed to keep her healthy and physically able to compete through three whole seasons now. These braces are great for prevention and they still allow the players to move freely and be competitive. If you're looking for a good ankle brace, I highly recommend this brace.

Excellent Stability - M. Strande "M" on Oct 21, 2011

I've struggled with a loose ankle for many years. When running or using an elliptical machine, my ankle will move around and begin to hurt after 15-20 minutes. This little brace is lightweight, comfortable, and provides ample ankle support.

Putting the brace on is a breeze. Simply slip the sleeve over your ankle/heel and lace up. Once laced, you wrap two strong nylon straps crisscross over your ankle and secure with Velcro. This takes about 2 minutes and once done, the ankle is secure. I've used bulky braces in the past that cost many times more than this - with mixed results. Most of the bulky braces end up in the closet/trash because they are a burden to put on and wear - so they don't get worn.

This brace is a value and does exactly what it's meant to do. It does not provide any cushion but that's what a good pair of shoes is for (see my review of the ASICS Men's GEL-Nimbus 13 Running Shoe). Highly recommended!

Perfect For Your Sprained Ankle. Get It!!! - Deborah Blancas on Aug 30, 2011

If you've sprained your ankle, this is the brace is for you! Don't delay: order it immediately.

- Adjustable
- Easy to put on. The velcro and laces loosen up to such an extent that the ankle brace easily slips over your injured ankle.
- Reduces swelling, like an "Ace" bandage. You adjust the tightness. You can use a folded sock as extra padding.
- Offers support both while sleeping and walking.
- Fits either foot.
- Allows you to wear your regular footwear.

This is a fabulous product that I'm glad I'll have on hand from now on.

Ballin - tido on Aug 7, 2011

I use them for basketball and I really love the support they provide. What a good product, I'm so glad I decided to invest in these ankle braces.

Support And Comfort... - T. Trinh "gotoma8" on Jul 24, 2011

I like this brace. I sprained my ankle for the first time and it's been four months since I'd played again. This gives good support and is comfortable, though a little bulky for the soccer shoes.

But it works!

Getting A Second One - RF9193 on Jul 7, 2011

I have had multiple long distance running, soccer, and snowboarding injuries. I now have chronic pain in my ankles releived only by bi-monthly injections. Since I dont like needles I went looking for a good brace to keep me from future injury and this seems to cover it. I now just jog and play Ultimate Frisbee, and this seems to work very well. Its easy and fast to put on, has none of the hard inflexible peices that other braces have which makes it pack easily, and seats fairly well on my foot (although the sizing is a little odd). Also wear a tall sock as the stiching on the top of the brace can rub a little if you play barefoot (which I do sometimes).

All that said I am getting a second one for my other ankle after feeling confident in its ability to keep my ankle in place when making the hardest of cuts or after enduring runs when many of your joints start to get loose.

Good Product - Jay on Jun 22, 2011

My left ankle has always been my weak ankle. I've used many ankle supports, but none has matched the protection of the aso guards.

The aso is flexible to wear, but when there is pressure, the technology of the straps kicks in, preventing minor ankle rolls.

The weekend after I've received this product, I sprained my ankle playing basketball. When I stepped on the foot of another player, I felt the aso guard stopped the degree of the ankle roll. I feel that I was not wearing the aso guard, I probably would have been out of the commission for a long time. Fortunately, my ankle only took about a week to fully heal.

Its is a great product and worth the investment!

Best Support - J. S. Johnson on Feb 8, 2011

My husband has a deformity in his ankle, and this is the only stabilizer that he's found that provides the proper support and fits well in his work boots. He wears this about 12 hours a day and is on his feet about half of that time. It's comfortable for him and has definitely made a difference in his pain level.

Great Ankle Support - THEDUDE9809 on Jan 31, 2011

Tried out many different brands and ASO seems to be the best one out there. Most of the other ones will do the job of stabilizing the ankle but ASO seems to be the most comfortable. I can wear it and play basketball for hours without feeling sore on the bottom of my foot and my leg above my ankle. Definitely recommended.

Fantastic Ankle Brace - Geoffrey Fairchild on Sep 19, 2010

I picked up this ankle brace today after spraining my ankle pretty badly yesterday during a rugby game. When I woke up this morning, I could barely walk. I couldn't put any pressure on my ankle, and I thought I was going to have to use crutches to get around. I read some reviews on ankle braces, saw this one, and went to my local athletic store to pick it up. It's a little cheaper on Amazon, but I couldn't wait for shipping.

After using the brace for only a few hours, I have to admit that it's basically magic. I've sprained my ankle lots of times before, and this is the first time that I feel completely confident walking the day after the incident. It does a fantastic job of locking my ankle in place. I went straight to the gym, and while I didn't do any running or anything involving my lower body, just walking around on it wasn't bad at all. I'll probably wear it almost 24/7 during the course of the next week or two while my ankle heals. It's very comfortable, and while it provides excellent stability, it doesn't really hinder my movement in any bad way. I can't comment on how this brace functions during fast-paced movement like running, but given my experience so far, I'm not really worried.

Overall, I'd highly recommend this brace if you have a weak ankle and need support. It's a little pricey, but we're talking about one of the most crucial joints in the body. Price shouldn't really be an issue when it comes to recovering your ability to walk/run.

Great Brace, But Takes A While To Put On - Just Mike on Aug 22, 2010

This is a great ankle brace. I got it to help support my ankle in a self-defense class and it does the job.

My one disclaimer: compared to another velcro-only brace that I have, the ASO can be a bit of a chore to put on and off. The laces, which help supply much of the support for the ASO, tack on a few seconds, so much so that I occasionally use my velcro-only brace instead of the ASO.

However, this is a minor quibble. Ultimately, I'm quite satisfied with this purchase and feel comfortable using it, even when practicing roundhouse kicks.

Great Product - roger on Sep 14, 2009

This was suggested for a volleyball player after an ankle injury to help in recovery. It provides excellent support and is not bulky like others. Excellent support for the ankle but allows the ankle to strengthen also.

Ankle Brace - Patrick K. Murphy on Mar 18, 2009

I bought this ankle brace as replacement for one my son lost that was provided him by his school's athletic trainer. My son sustained a spiral fracture of the tibia at the ankle playing football and this brace was recommended as the best solution to both support his ankle at the tibia and allow freedom of movement to play sports. He also uses it for basketball and soccer without complaint as it fits in the different style shoes. I bought size Large and it fits him even thought his shoe size is 13 as the XL was too big for his youth bone size.

Great Brace! - Colleen Barber on Jul 29, 2011

This is a great ankle brace - for recent sprains, lingering injuries, or just generally weak ankles in need of extra support. It provides much more support and stability than other braces out there, and it's very comfortable. I've worn it comfortably with running sneakers, cleats, and turf shoes. It washes very easily too in the washing machine. The material is not ruined at all from washing. I've had one of these for 8 years now (still works great), and I just bought a second one for a newly sprained ankle. Overall, a very good product that I'd highly recommend!

Ankle Much Better - MrG on Jan 14, 2012

This ankle brace was rec. to me when my son hurt his ankle playing football and was worried about being able to play basketball. He is able to participate without any difficulty and has asked that I buy another for his "good" ankle.

Buyer - Buyer on Jan 12, 2012

I've been wearing one of these ASO ankle braces for 2 years. I first got one from my podiatrist and wore it every day for about 6 months. My ankle tendon finally healed enough so that I only needed to wear the brace when I did activity other than just walking. I still wear the brace 3-4 times a week. It fits in my tennis shoes and my every day work casual lace up and velcro fastened shoes. It would fit with most any other type of shoe as well since it is very flexible and thin. So, I'm thrilled with this product. I found this "exact" same brace at Amazon for almost 50% less than the brace i got through my podiatrist! Needless to say I purchased it right away. I highly recommend this product without question.

Ankle Strength - dave1970 on Nov 2, 2011

The ankle support was as advertised. Recommended by my phys trainer. excellent support. Adjusts so that it fits like a glove. Can wear it with shoes. Lightweight.

Support That Last. - Kyle Daniel on Oct 9, 2011

This brace was a must after I broke my ankle last year and was finally out of my boot. Until I used this product, I was unable to to perform sharp cuts for my Ultimate Club team and now have great improved my ankles strength and stamina to last the whole 3 hrs of practice. Fits well in my cleats and is quick drying if used in mud.

Great Product For The Price. - G. L. Thompson on Sep 27, 2011

I ordered this product because of its good reviews and it has lived up to them. I tore two of the ligaments in my ankle in the spring and after a couple months I was itching to get back on the tennis court but needed some extra support to keep from rolling my still weak ankle.

After a little practice I found this brace to be easy to put on and take off (a minor complaint is that I have to completely unlace it to get it off). It is light enough that it doesn't interfere with movement and provides more than adequate support while allowing natural motion during activity.

Good Ankle Brace. - W. Snyder on Sep 25, 2011

I purchased this for my 15 year old son. He already had one and needed another for football. They seem to really help him when he is playing. They offer the support he needs and fit his shoes better than some of the other braces we have tried.
The pricing from this company was the best we found and they shipped it quickly.
This was a good deal all the way around.

Good Product - Lake Forest on Sep 21, 2011

The brace works fine for my daughter when she plays tennis. It provides lateral
support for the ankle. Very happy with the product.
The vendor delivered the item on time. If you live in west coast, the delivery could take 4days longer than in MA area.

Life Saver! - PuristDriver on Aug 28, 2011

I recently purchased this for a week in New York for work as I ruptured my Achilles tendon about 3 months ago. To ensure that I had enough support in that hectic city with the poor roads and sidewalks in addition to the amount of stairs I had to attack in the subway, this was very helpful to help me get through the week. I actually slipped during one day it was raining and the brace was there to help my ankle and Achilles tendon out. I could only imagine what would've happened if I didn't have it. The materials used are high quality and the product overall is very reliable.

Love Them - M. Niehl on Jul 24, 2011

Great product. Lighter and more comfortable than the mcdavid product. Barely even notice I'm wearing them but seem to have great support

Great Ankle Support - Chrissy on Jun 30, 2011

I was given this ankle brace by my orthopedic surgeon after ankle surgery. I recently injured my other ankle (high ankle sprain that is not healing) and purchased the same ankle brace from Amazon. It's lightweight, adds extra support and isn't too bulky. I play softball and volleyball and don't like the rigid hinged ankle braces out there. This brace is good for either right or left ankles.

Superb Ankle Brace - Joe T on Mar 22, 2010

This product serves its purpose very well, especially after injury. It provides the necessary compression, stability and comfort. I was able to walk within 2 weeks after a grade 2 ankle sprain. Highly recommend.

Great Stabilizing Brace - Jane Sartori on Mar 13, 2010

I recently sprained my ankle and work outdoors and was told to wear a very bulky splint-type brace when I return to work. This type of brace would not work for me and researched a type of brace that would prevent ankle 'roll-overs'. I was very happy with the ASO brace and it works beautifully.

Great For Recovery Of Ankle Rolls - GF baker on Sep 17, 2009

As a 48 year old woman who takes advanced ballet and tap classes, I love this product. After a severe ankle sprain 6 years ago, where my doc told me I had torn off bone, he said I should not dance again without wearing a brace. Great thought, just doesn't translate well to dance. Wore a compression type brace for about a year and then went to dancing without. Tried this brace but it didn't allow enough range of motion for either ballet or tap, using it to prevent injury. Well, I rolled the ankle again last night. I carry the compression brace with me and put it on immediately along with ice. Wore that all night. Today I knew I would be on my feet all day. As a school teacher--elementary--it is hard to teach sitting down. Put on this brace and have been practically pain-free all day. And I KNOW my ankle is not stressing the injury as I go through my day. I just wish I had had this 6 years ago immediately after the injury. I think this one might just go into the dance bag, too!

Not Worth It! - luckynluv on Oct 31, 2010

I purchased this product because it has great reviews and I prefer to go with the better and more expensive items. I hate buying cheap and look for quality products. This item is not that user friendly. It is annoying to put on with the laces and straps. It also did not support my ankle very well. I got better support with my ace bandages. I have put this item in my closet, probably will not use again. You are better off paying a lot less and buying an ace bandage which continue to work for me.
