Editorial Reviews
The ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis is one of the most popular ankle supports with coaches, trainers and physical therapists. The contoured tongue provides exceptional fit and is constructed of light-weight yet durable Cool Flex material. This material also lines the inside back of the boot, providing increased comfort to the achilles area. The polyester-cotton laces are strong and resist shrinking.
20 or the 25 universities in the AP top 25 wear the ASO or EVO ankle brace. 55 of the 65 schools in mens NCAA tournament 2009 wore the ASO ankle orthosis. ASO is the choice of champions.

- for initial treatment of a sprain I found the air cast gave more relief from pain and adequate support, however once I was up and walking around I wanted the aso to make sure I didn't turn my foot the wrong way again.
I decided to try after a lot of hours at the gym, ankle exercises,.... First game my ankle felt awkward while playing (looked like I had never played soccer before) and was very sore after just playing 15 min each half.
A friend recommended this and bought it straight away.
I have now played 2 full games with it and it feels great while playing and almost not sore at all the day after.
Fits very comfortable inside of my cleats and I can barely feel is there.
couldn't be happier!
The most important thing is the comfort. When I put it on and put on my shoes; I feel comfortable. I barely notice the brace there. Well worth the price. If you want a ankle brace to wear regularly for sports; I would recommend getting this first and not waste money on others. I wish I knew about this and bought it way before all the others. I could have say around 2 hundred dollars.
So I decided to check if there were any really good ankle wraps. I needed something light, easy to put on, and very supportive. I read the reviews and decided to buy both the ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis (size large--I wear size 11 shoes) and the McDavid Lightweight Ankle Brace because both reviewed very favorably. After 4 games wearing both, I have to pick the ASO as the clear winner for me. There are a few less lace loops to cinch in the ASO, which makes it easier to put on. The tongue of the ASO is a lil stretchy with helps for a comfortable fit. And with the extra straps around the outside the whole thing just feels tighter and more protective.
I do have to note that both are very protective as I have not rolled my ankles in either. I just felt the ASO gives a lil more protection and support with a much more comfortable fit. My shin guards fit a lil better over the McDavid's though, but I found that just pushing the guard up an inch or so higher worked better. The McDavid's also started rubbing on the back of my ankle above my heel. To be fair this could be my fault for not tightening them again after I warmed up...which I definitely recommend.
So after the trials I decided to by a 2nd ASO and I await its delivery as we speak. So for all you soccer players with bad ankles, I highly recommend the ASO!
I do a lot of hiking on uneven terrain, and came close to twisting my other ankle. So I decided to buy the other highly reviewed ankle brace, the ASO Ankle Stabilizing Orthosis.
The good points:
They both work on the same principle, and are both effective at their purpose. A tight fitting, but still flexible foot brace, with two cross straps, and one around the lower shin/upper ankle strap.
They both get a 5 star rating from me, there are minor differences between the two, with which I will list here:
The McDavid is tighter on the top of the foot, and is harder to remove. Tends to be slightly uncomfortable if overtightened. You have to untie multiple laces to be able to remove it. It feels more snug than the ASO. I would say this one offers slightly better support around the ankles, at cost of more discomfort. Good if you have more of a severe sprain.
The ASO gives you more mobility, still with great support on the ankle. Easier to remove.
I wear 9.5 shoes, so I have medium for both.
Overall, they are both good, but the McDavid feels slightly tighter on the foot. I still give both 5 stars, since they both perform as designed.
Putting the brace on is a breeze. Simply slip the sleeve over your ankle/heel and lace up. Once laced, you wrap two strong nylon straps crisscross over your ankle and secure with Velcro. This takes about 2 minutes and once done, the ankle is secure. I've used bulky braces in the past that cost many times more than this - with mixed results. Most of the bulky braces end up in the closet/trash because they are a burden to put on and wear - so they don't get worn.
This brace is a value and does exactly what it's meant to do. It does not provide any cushion but that's what a good pair of shoes is for (see my review of the ASICS Men's GEL-Nimbus 13 Running Shoe). Highly recommended!
- Adjustable
- Easy to put on. The velcro and laces loosen up to such an extent that the ankle brace easily slips over your injured ankle.
- Reduces swelling, like an "Ace" bandage. You adjust the tightness. You can use a folded sock as extra padding.
- Offers support both while sleeping and walking.
- Fits either foot.
- Allows you to wear your regular footwear.
This is a fabulous product that I'm glad I'll have on hand from now on.
But it works!
All that said I am getting a second one for my other ankle after feeling confident in its ability to keep my ankle in place when making the hardest of cuts or after enduring runs when many of your joints start to get loose.
The aso is flexible to wear, but when there is pressure, the technology of the straps kicks in, preventing minor ankle rolls.
The weekend after I've received this product, I sprained my ankle playing basketball. When I stepped on the foot of another player, I felt the aso guard stopped the degree of the ankle roll. I feel that I was not wearing the aso guard, I probably would have been out of the commission for a long time. Fortunately, my ankle only took about a week to fully heal.
Its is a great product and worth the investment!
After using the brace for only a few hours, I have to admit that it's basically magic. I've sprained my ankle lots of times before, and this is the first time that I feel completely confident walking the day after the incident. It does a fantastic job of locking my ankle in place. I went straight to the gym, and while I didn't do any running or anything involving my lower body, just walking around on it wasn't bad at all. I'll probably wear it almost 24/7 during the course of the next week or two while my ankle heals. It's very comfortable, and while it provides excellent stability, it doesn't really hinder my movement in any bad way. I can't comment on how this brace functions during fast-paced movement like running, but given my experience so far, I'm not really worried.
Overall, I'd highly recommend this brace if you have a weak ankle and need support. It's a little pricey, but we're talking about one of the most crucial joints in the body. Price shouldn't really be an issue when it comes to recovering your ability to walk/run.
My one disclaimer: compared to another velcro-only brace that I have, the ASO can be a bit of a chore to put on and off. The laces, which help supply much of the support for the ASO, tack on a few seconds, so much so that I occasionally use my velcro-only brace instead of the ASO.
However, this is a minor quibble. Ultimately, I'm quite satisfied with this purchase and feel comfortable using it, even when practicing roundhouse kicks.
After a little practice I found this brace to be easy to put on and take off (a minor complaint is that I have to completely unlace it to get it off). It is light enough that it doesn't interfere with movement and provides more than adequate support while allowing natural motion during activity.
The pricing from this company was the best we found and they shipped it quickly.
This was a good deal all the way around.
support for the ankle. Very happy with the product.
The vendor delivered the item on time. If you live in west coast, the delivery could take 4days longer than in MA area.
